PAUL Hogan was unable to get the better of former world champion Michael van Gerwen in the fourth round of the Coral UK Open, losing 9-4 to the world number one.
The Buckskin darts ace won four games at Butlins Minehead yesterday to reach the last 32 of the competition, but the draw was not kind to the 51-year-old, handing him a match against one of the game's in-form players.
The match took place on the main stage and in front of the ITV cameras, but Hogan made a bad start, losing the first four legs. He recovered well, taking the next three to reduce the deficit dramatically, but van Gerwen held his nerve, winning five of the next six legs to claim a comfortable victory.
Despite the defeat, it's been a good weekend for Hogan, who matched his performance at last year's UK Open, when he was beaten at the same stage by another former world champion, Mark Webster.
