Saints to come first for Fraser

Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster admits his priority is to be successful at St Mary’s and any progress with England will be as a result of his performances for Ronald Koeman’s team.

The £10m signing from Celtic is a regular in Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions squads, and is today expected to be named in the group for next Wednesday’s friendly against Norway and the opening Euro 2016 qualifier, in Switzerland, on September 8.

He is not the only Saints player with aspirations of being called-up, though.

Nathaniel Clyne was thought to be close to earning a place on the standby list for this summer’s World Cup and he will be hoping his strong start to the season will now result in recognition for the senior side.

Forster, a towering 6ft 7in stopper who has two international caps, was part of the squad that Hodgson took to Brazil, and there are suggestions he could push Joe Hart for the number-one jersey.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman has already said he is capable of fulfilling the role, following an impressive start to the campaign.

In three competitive appearances for the club, the 26-year-old has kept two clean sheets, most recently in the Capital One Cup victory against Millwall and the goalless draw with West Brom on Saturday.

When asked if he felt playing in the Premier League would help his England credentials, after moving from the Scottish top flight, he said: “Yes, I’ve only played two games in the Premier League and that’s a fantastic thing to be a part of.

“So it’s important that I work as hard I can with Dave (goalkeeper coach Dave Watson), keep working hard under him and trying to progress as a goalkeeper.

“It comes down to playing well for Southampton first and foremost.

“That’s what it’s all about and if I’m doing that then we’ll just have to see [what happens with England].

“But it’s all about trying to work hard and improving.”

Forster’s move to St Mary’s has seen him link-up with England goalkeeping coach Watson, who is employed in that capacity under Koeman.

His presence was a big draw for the former Newcastle stopper.

“I know Dave from England and know how good he is,” he said. “The opportunity to work with him day in day out was something that I really wanted to do.

“That was a big draw and you don’t get the opportunity to play for someone like Ronald Koeman every day either.

“The club is full of fantastic people, the chairman, the owner; everyone.

“We’ve got a fantastic changing room.

“It’s been brilliant working under Koeman. Learning from a guy like that is what it’s all about. He’s been really good for everyone.”

Like that last line : "Brilliant working with the New Manager".
It tees it up well as a good place to work, learn and improve. ( A magnet to others ?)
Lets hope Jack Cork thinks Mr RoKo is a good mentor too -- really dont want him going to Crystal Palace.
And we have 4 days left to get a Marque signing .. Danny Blind could be good :) Failing that how about Matthew Leckie who must have impressed RoKo at the world cup !!

Watched him on Tuesday.
He was immense in our goal, both in command and physical stature.
Using Dave Merringtons' description "Just like picking cherries from a tree".
Ref: Catching the ball.
You could see his positive effect on our defence, who played really well and particularly Yoshie.
Looks a fantastic signing for us.

Still very painful to listen to the games on "SaintsPlayer" with most of the much loved names gone. (I still miss Marian Pahars)

Agree with SFCOLDBOY, names, personalities and qualities now beginning to emerge and it would be wonderful if this season could see us safe and we retain a majority of players to form "The Class of 2015".

Not bothered about closeness to the top at the moment BUT would love to end up above Spurs and Liverpool.

A great goalie and possibly will be our best signing, he got us the point on Saturday and will definitely gain us more over the season. I loved Boruc but he had a kind of flakiness around him which left me nervous, I'd compare the composure of Forster to that of Shilton!!

Agree with most of what you say here. Good to hear Koeman is getting praise and I hope Cork gets a new deal. Not sure about Danny Blind - thought he retired around the same time as Koeman did. Matthew Leckie dived a lot in the world cup. He didn't impress me.

Danny Blind doesn't really fit with our policy of buying younger players, however Daley Blind would be a decent signing if he doesn't join Loser van Gaal at ManUre

@sheffield Saint don't be too negative about the cup draw. Arsenal will undoubtedly play youngsters as that do every season so out of all the "big" clubs we could have drawn this was probably the best we could get IMO. Get through this and we could be on for a really good run in the league cup and I for one would love to see us win it!

I still miss Terry Paine and Ron Davies! In my 53 years as a Saints fan, I sincerely believe that we have our best ever manager and I've seen some good ones. Ronko says he's in it for the long haul, although I doubt that he'll last as long as Ted Bates did!!! We have the foundations in place to build our most successful ever team. We have greater depth in our squad than last year (with perhaps another 2 or 3 to come by next week). We have sorted our finances and got top dollar for the want away players. We have improved how we can start to take advantage of the FFP rules and are now closer to the big 6 in this respect (still cannot pay the highest wages but going in the right direction). I'm convinced that we'll have far greater player loyalty from now on (only losing the odd one or two in future transfer windows) and our results will improve and we'll steadily climb the table. Finally, I believe that the Tadic cross and Pelle finish will become routine for us and there'll be feared by all opposition teams. Great times are coming.

Easy enough to explain mate - he's now wearing an Arsenal shirt.

I would choose Clyne as part of the squad on the basis of his ability to play on either side. He is arguable the best English RB available and was for the whole of last season too. Bet he's happy not to be tarnished with that WC fiasco though and if he had been he'd have been playing for a top four club right now and not us.
Unsung hero fits him quite well.

At the moment Fraser looks our best signing, but Tadic seems to be getting used the the Prem.

However we still need better quality players, as most on here keep saying, a CB, top Winger & a Goalscorer are essential, plus a quality CM like Jordy Clasie would be good, especially if Gaston leaves.

It seems Les/Ralph/RonKo have failed to attract Alderweireld so hope they switch to Wollscheid quickly, only 4 days left.

MoPo is not going to let us have Townsend, but not sure he or Redmond are good enough at crossing of the ball for Pelle's head, so another option is needed.

A proven Goalscorer is the forth player needed so that is one player per day Les, time is running out.

Don't forget we needed three players before the summer started. Yes there have been a lot coming in but only due to the fact Les has sold nearly our entire first team from last season - and it appears he may not be done yet.

Tried to explain why that should be so Seed but there is just something blocking the processing of info that you don't want to hear. Do you do it deliberately to wind people up or are you really just a mite dim.

Offer to take over the selection and bargaining process yourself, Les is so bad he'd jump at the chance of having such an accomplished individual as yourself standing by his side.

You're bound to get Messi by Saturday.
