SAINTS are set to take part in a European Cup-style competition for under-21 teams.

They are one of 16 clubs across Europe due to be involved - including eight from Britain, featuring both Manchester clubs, Chelsea and West Ham.

The Premier League is planning a new under-21 tournament this season involving other clubs in Europe - but claims the competition is not a rival to FA chairman Greg Dyke's ambitions for a 'B-league' involving top-flight reserve sides.

The plan, which the Premier League is hoping will receive UEFA's blessing, would see eight under-21 sides from England's top-flight play against eight others from countries including Spain and Germany as well as Scottish champions Celtic.

In May, Dyke's England Commission proposed a B league to operate below League Two aimed at giving young players more match experience - something that the new Premier League competition also aims to do.

Premier League communications director Dan Johnson said its proposal had been under consideration for several years and was unrelated to Dyke's scheme.

Johnson said: "We do believe it would be good for the development of talented young players but it is not an answer to the B league proposal at all. It is something we have wanted to do for a number of years.

"We are keen to work with UEFA on what we think is a good development opportunity and there has been a lot of support from clubs on the continent.

"Our view is that an under-21 competition with a significant programme of international fixtures at lower age levels is a good opportunity to expose players to this level of competition.

"We now need to work with UEFA for their agreement."

That could present some problems however as UEFA already has its own under-19 tournament that shadows the Champions League.

The Premier League believe however that the age difference of the two competitions would allow them to co-exist.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said earlier this year that a B league would damage the football pyramid that currently exists in the English game while the Football League has also opposed it.

The new Premier League competition would see 16 clubs split into four groups of four, with the winners and runners-up going through to quarter-finals which would be played over two legs. Up to three over-age players would also be allowed.

The clubs that finished in the top eight of the Premier League's under-21 development league would take part - apart from Liverpool who decided to not to take up the chance, allowing West Ham in instead.

The 16 teams set to play in the European event are Saints, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Fulham, West Ham, Leicester, Sunderland, Celtic, Athletic Bilboa, Benfica, Borussia Monchengladbach, Schalke, FC Porto, PSV Eindhoven and Villarreal.

Good news as Saints could do very well with all our young talent and the wonderful production line at the envied Academy.

But, must hope it does not get them noticed too much as perhaps more problems - just like the World Cup turned out to be!

Whoo-hooo! Is this a "short cut to the Champion's League"?

I see both the positives and negatives of entering this competition, on the positive front it will give our youngsters the opportunity of playing European sides, gain experience of travelling during the week and playing 1st team football at the weekend, (I think we will need a few of them) on the negative front, it will allow other clubs in Europe as well as England to view our youngsters with the possibility of them cherry picking our best young players come transfer window time, no fan was happy when when Luke Shaw left despite to silly money paid by the Mancs and even more were unhappy when Calum Chambers left.

This is another competition we are almost certain to flop in for all the right reasons.
If a player reaching 18yrs old is good he get promoted to our first team. Many of the teams on this list theire top U21 players will be on loan or staying with their development squads.

I too fear this is just a shop window for the vultures from the top squad to cherry pick the best whilst turning out their own who they feel will not make the grade to sell on to the smaller clubs.
Call my cynical if you wish.

Well said. Also I see half of the teams are British. I think Greg Dyke is getting his "second/ reserve" teams by another method.

This competition will be good for British kids. But it will be very good for the big teams - and they will be able to keep their younger players busy at a higher level than reserve team games.

It won't be as good for Saints, Fulham, WetH, Fulham, Leicester and Sunderland, as it will be a shop window, it will also turn young players heads even quicker than they are already being turned, it will be extra expenditure, it will mean the young players will be more tired when they get asked to play in the first team - which will happen a lot more with the smaller clubs than the larger ones.
