Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo fails to show for training due to medical reasons

Basingstoke Gazette: Osvaldo fails to show for Saints training due to medical reasons Osvaldo fails to show for Saints training due to medical reasons

Dani Osvaldo failed to return to Saints for pre-season training yesterday due to medical reasons.

The Italian striker, who left the club under a cloud in January after a training ground bust up with Jose Fonte, didn’t show up at Staplewood for Ronald Koeman’s first day with his new squad, having informed the club that he would be absent due to illness.

The Daily Echo understands Osvaldo’s absence has been backed up by a doctor’s note and that Saints are satisfied with the reason for Osvaldo’s no-show.

It is unclear when he will return for duty.

The current break could well be a welcome impasse for the player and club.

It either gives Koeman time to establish whether it will be possible to try and reintegrate Osvaldo or, more likely, give Saints further breathing space to try and manufacture a move for the man who last summer became their record signing.

Italian media have reported that Inter Milan are making Osvaldo one of their top attacking targets as they aim to reinforce their striking department ahead of the new Serie A campaign.

There they will aim to try wrestle the title off of Juventus, where Osvaldo spent the end of last season on loan after being bombed out by Saints.

Away from the focus on Osvaldo and the club’s trio of departed stars, the mood was good amongst the players who met Koeman for the first time.

It was very much a ‘getting to know you day’ in the sunshine, and not just for the first team, as the squad enjoyed training on the beautiful new pitch at the upgraded Staplewood training ground.

The coaching staff for the new season are also trying to bond and build relationships.

Koeman was able to bring two members of staff in with him when he joined, and selected his brother Erwin and Jan Kluitenberg.

Saints, whose football side is headed up by Les Reed, have then added Sammy Lee and Dave Watson to the coaching staff.

In addition, under-21 coach Martin Hunter has been promoted to a position of the club’s technical director.

Oz may be tough - but he AIN'T THAT TOUGH !!

Like JUVE - let's get the lad in - and use him as an IMPACT STRIKER - BACK UP STRIKER and in the FA CUP.

GREAT GOAL for OZ against Citeh - we were the only Club to halt their run of Wins.

NEWS OF ANOTHER NUMBER 1 STRIKER and TOP ECORING STRIKER NEEDED.

Foot Soldier and 12TH - Ings is good, but we need to off load Dani first if he doesn't want to be here.

I've read Inter are looking at him but at what price ?

Inter failed with Tom Ince - so is it a lack of money there ?

I agree, not a lot of money floating around in Italian football, saints may have sell him for half the price we paid just to offload him.

I know a lot of people won't like this, but, if he behaves himself and the squad are prepared to have him back so be it. If no one wants him we are stuck with him, so lets use his talent to the best of his ability. After all we don't have many strikers with J Rod being out. I would love to know how the players felt about the new gaffer and his team? One thing we have had over the past few year since league one is a united team of not just work mates but friends (Osvaldo being the exception) so it would be nice to hear about the relationship between players and staff.

Seems a bit convenient he pulls a sicky on the 1st day of pre-season training.

Call it fickle if you want - but the element of trust is disappearing on my part. Perhaps I should stop trawling the net looking for positive Saints stories !!!

Doesn't bode well. First day back at work and he's got a sick note. I was all for giving him a chance to reintegrate into the squad but it seems like he might be just as reluctant to return as many people (Fonte?) are to have him back. If that's the case then it may be time to cut our losses and get shot of him asap. It's a shame, but if the situation was salvagable and the lad could be reformed, wouldn't Poachertinno be trying to sign him for Spurs? After all, he originally rated him highly enough to pay £12+mill for him less than a year ago.

Once we've done that any other signings will make us stronger than last year, I for one would like a pacey winger, new GK ( Forster from Celtic) as a priority! Let Morgan and Dejan go for big bucks if they don't want to play for us anymore. I know lots of new players means having to gel them in but if you really look back over the last few prem seasons, almost half the prem sides buy or sign a min of 4 - 6 new players every year, man city did it last yr and won the league!! The key is signing the right players and I trust Les and Ron to get it right!! Once we have a few signings confirmed things will start to get very exciting......

There was a report that Saints were after Man City striker John Guidetti for £6m.

THE INDEPENDENT :-

" Guidetti has carved out a reputation as one of Europe’s most clinical young strikers after a devastating loan spell at Feyenoord.

Guidetti joined the Rotterdam club for the 2011-12 season and racked up an astonishing tally of 20 goals in just 23 appearances. The Swedish youngster bagged three hat-tricks in succession during his spell at De Kuip stadium, leading former coach Ronald Koeman to dub him as a “phenomenal” talent who could one day exceed his compatriot Zlatan Ibrahimovic. "

Man City fans rate him highly but say he can't get his chance at Man City because of the success of the current strike force at City.

I think we can now fully understand why the Roma fans hated the guy, but to be honest I think he quite likes the attention so won't give him the satisfaction.

Fact is that Danni isn't significant enough to earn any hate or dislike from Saints fans - he's not even earned that right because, as a player, he is a non entity as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldn't even say he's wasted his potential because frankly there is no evidence that he's as good as he or any of his Italian admirers think he is.

One YouTube moment a season doesn't make you a talented player, though it seems it does fool people into signing you.

Knuckle down or just disappear into obscurity with a bit of dignity. It's that or a future on Big Brother Italia.

I said this yesterday in this site.

I'm probably in the minority of one, but I'm quite glad he's back, I hope bygones can bygones and Ron can sort out the issues between the rest of the players and him.

It will be like signing a new £15 million pound striker without spending money earned from the sell of players, money that can be spent elsewhere on strengthening the team. I'm not saying don't the likes of Pelle, but he does have the quality we need now Rickie has gone and JRod is out for the foreseeable, regardless of any future signings I would give him until Christmas to see if the damage can repaired, if not let him go in January.

Football is about passion and what you'll generally find is that it will be the passionate fans who will genuinely get behind their team through thick and thin despite the odd moan.

All fans are asking on here is for people to respect the club and for the board to fight for the club with the same kind of passion they do. Players come and go, boards come and go, but we'll still be here.

Thus, if Dani wants to play for this club with passion (directed in the right way) he still has the chance to be loved and remembered, if he doesn't, we'll find someone who does.

That's fickle, but that's football.

So, as someone who doesn't want to stand in the way of players who want to move on, what do you think of the recent sales and what is your opinion on our chances of retaining Dejan and Spider now we've shown we are willing to sell our best players?

I've read Inter are looking at him but at what price ?

Inter failed with Tom Ince - so is it a lack of money there ?
why would inter need money for tom ince? he is a free agent, blackpool are only entitled to a compensation payment.
I think ince turned inter down anyway.
he is being touted around by his dad as if hes a wonder kid, problem is that he isn't that good and living off of your dads name wont get you that far. he wasn't good enough to get into the palace first team last year and it looks like he is heading to hull. that's just the old pals network at work, bruce and ince are mates from their manure days and only hull are really after him!
I have a feeling the whole inter thing was just a big publicity stunt to get his name back in the news as he hadn't been playing that often. I also fear that if he does have a good season somewhere his dad will be pushing for a big move again. the ox mk II I think we dodged a bullet when we didn't get him.

ings is ok but lets not let the fact that hes a fan of the club cloud our judgement, we should only buy him if he is good enough, and I`m not sure he is but then we will never know if he isnt given a chance, same with billy sharp.

Yeah, not sure whether Ings is the answer, but I wouldn't compare him to Billy so much. No disrespect, but we bought Billy, who is a great pro, to score goals for us in the Championship as an experienced, proven Championship player. I think both the Burnley guys could do well and step up to the Premier League, but I doubt anyone will take the punt, which several clubs could regret, just as they did with Rickie.

McCormack is another player who I doubt will be signed unless it is by one of the new boys. Again, this may be an oversight, but as mentioned, the transfer market is essentially a casino and even the best get caught out.

Bony did very well coming from the Dutch league, but that doesn't necessarily mean Pelle or Tadic will even though their record's are similarly impressive. It's a punt. An educated one because Ronald knows them, but a punt none-the-less.

He'll remain a toxic influence until he is shipped out. Irrespective of this you always seem to be ready to criticise others; is that just how it is with you or are you an apologist for Osvaldo (and Reed who many believe has responsibilities that exceed his abilities)?[/p][/quote]Haha Far from it RBITB, don't want Osvaldo anywhere near Southampton.

So, as someone who doesn't want to stand in the way of players who want to move on, what do you think of the recent sales and what is your opinion on our chances of retaining Dejan and Spider now we've shown we are willing to sell our best players?
desperately want those to remain and become part of the rebuild, will be very hard to keep them here though.
If Koeman can convince them that staying here would be better than north London I'll be very happy, but as with our three sold players so far it will be their decision.
We just cannot compete with Liverpool or Arsenal on wages or the prospect of silverware, so it'll be a huge task for our club.

Yep. Problem is that the board made an initial mistake leaving the door ajar for offers and since then it's been a bit of a circus.

It's all very well saying they don't want to lose anyone else, but when your players are now being linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs you are at the very least not in a great bargaining position.

Showing we'll sell if the price is right isn't going to slow down the flood of clubs enquiring about our players and I can't blame them - to be honest if we didn't have offers for the vast majority of our squad now I'd be slightly offended: Lovren, Cork, Clyne, Spider, J-Rod, JWP, Chambers, Fonte and probably Boruc considering we're being linked with wanting a new keeper, plus the two we do probably want to sell in Gaston (possibly) and Osvaldo. Wanyama would be linked too but jury is probably still out for other clubs.

Key will be Koeman and the players he brings in. If he can impress them in training and bring in one or two players that the players are impressed with we may stand a better chance, but then money comes into it as well.

We finished in a really strong position last term; now it seems everything is going to pot.

I was more optimistic in the bad old days.

Funny that.....

p.s. I've got a pair of boots if RK needs me next season. Anyone else available to help make up a starting 11?

Being a Brighton fan living in Southampton, I was surprised how well Saints did in the Premier league last season - no mean feat considering the number of "big" clubs swishing the money around.
What does puzzle me, as an outsider looking in, is why the club seems to be imploding after Cortese's exit. What with Pochettino leaving, followed by Lallana, Shaw and Lambert and others in the wings is there more of a sinister reason behind these departures?
Surely a club finishing 8th(?) and with aspirations of Europe would want to retain their best players and also strengthen the squad to achieve those aims.
So, the sinister reason, are the Liebherr family looking to off-load the club, having recouped some of their investment by the sale of the above three players, and is the £100m war chest just a sop to appease Saints fans?
Strange goings-on indeed.

We finished 8th whilst having the 5th lowest wage budget in the league and a lot of credit must go to Pochettino for that.
However, the big boys realise that these players heads can easily be turned by the lure of european football and at least a trebling of salaries.

Although contracts are in place, they are weighed so heavily in favour of the players, that trying to stop a player moving mid contact is futile, so the club has to extract as much out of the deal as possible.

Obviously fans want and demand loyalty, but sadly the likes of MLT are a thing of the past.
Good luck to your lot next season.

From TalkSport five mins ago.

Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo is close to ending his nightmare stay in the Premier League after agreeing personal terms to join Serie A giants Inter Milan.

The Italy international is expected to undergo a medical at the San Siro in the coming days and return to Serie A, having initially signed for the Saints from Roma at the beginning of last season.

Osvaldo, who scored three goals in 13 appearances for Southampton last term, failed to report back to the club for pre-season training this week and has not featured in the first-team since being suspended for having a training ground fight with team-mate Jose Fonte.

The 28-year-old joined Juventus on loan in January but failed to impress for the Serie A champions, as the club decided not to make the deal permanent.
