RUMOUR MILL, June 5 - 'Saints refused permission to speak with Magath'

Felix Magath

Saints have reportedly been refused permission to speak to Fulham manager Felix Magath.

According to the Daily Mirror, the club are said to have made an approach to the London side, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, as they look to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

Saints have already held talks with Ronald Koeman, who is leaving Feyenoord this summer, but they intend to speak with other candidates before making a final decision.

An appointment is likely to be made towards the end of next week, or the beginning of the following week.

German manager Magath joined Fulham on an 18-month contract in February, but was unable to keep them in the top flight.

The 60-year-old, who has managed clubs such as Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen and Schalke, has already said he remains committed to staying at Fulham, despite the team’s demotion to the Championship.

Funny how our board did not say no when Pochettino was approached by Spurs. Or is the case that they are just as weak and ineffectual as they appear????
Or do they have an agenda to sell all our best players and saw Pochettino as a disruptive element potentially?
I do not mean to be negative but quite simply I cannot find anything about the present set up that inspires confidence its just a catalog of errors, meaningless soundbites and lack of decision.
Now they prose to take possibly another ten days to appoint a manager, why when Koeman ticks all the boxes, unless of course you plan to get rid of all our best players in which case he probably doesnt. I wish they and in particular Katarina Liebherr would do something that inspires confidence and repairs the damage done to the club s reputation in the eyes of the fans but it just doesnt seem likely.
The key issue is whether the players are going to be retained or sold off. At no time has any member of the board convinced the club s support that they do not mean to sell our best players, and yet they claim to have the clubs best interest at heart. Its preposterous, when the club for the first time in its history has an opportunity to break down the premiership s hierarchy and they do what, behave like lemings and jump off the nearest cliff?
Katarina, as they say in a Muttley cartoon, DO SOMETHING.

More's the point, why didn't we refuse to let Spurs speak to Poch? He was under contract as he'd stated himself on several occasions.

Happily, we are in a situation where there are few employed managers we would be interested in and a few good ones who are out of work.

Agree he isn't the man for us, but I do have sympathy for both him and Pepe Mel - neither had time to make a difference. That said, I wasn't impressed with the way Magath came in and alienated his top players before returning to them for the final few games. It wasn't really the time or place to make that sort of stand,

The Board is not going to give a minute by minute update on what they are doing. That would be unprofessional and its not what they are there for.

The other way of looking at this position is that whilst we are undoubtedly a premiership outfit the owner was never going to spend the ridiculous sums seen at places such as City and Chelski ... that meant that if anyone at this club shines at a truly stellar level then they will want to leave if they want Champions League football. Similarly Poch wanted to be at a club who were likely to give him the ridiculous money to buy succes. (Maybe Tottering Hotspuds will give him that-maybe not - jury is out on that).

Against that sobering background of "career ambition" the Board is having to deal with the fact that we have some top stars that now want mega stardom, and presumably the money that goes with it. Look at how many big names pass through City or Chelski or even United... we are simply facing the same problem.

The true test will be to see how they come of this phase. So let them get on with it and prove they can handle it.

One thing they will not do, and SHOULD NOT DO, is carry out a series of knee jerk reactions and try to pander to the gutter press or worse. Thye will certainly not be looking at running the club on the back of public opinion. That would be equally ridiculous.

Leave them alone toi get on with it. Judge them by results.

So if in a few days' time we offer Koeman the job, he'll know that he wasn't our first choice, and we're only offering it to him because other, preferred, candidates turned us down or were refused permission to speak to us. Nice HR there Ralph.

True, although we're not 100% sure what went on behind the scenes. We know MoPo quit and bought his way out of the contract. Maybe he spoke to Spurs on the side.

As for Magath and Pepe Mel, it's not as if they weren't aware of the situation they were signing up for. They knew how much time they had and what resources were available when they took the jobs. It wasn't a secret Fulham were cr*p.

Bit unfair, he didn't have much time with Fulham and his record in Germany wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. I can see why he has been shortlisted allthough I personally dont feel like he is the right man. Whatever happens and whoever gets the job and whether we keep our best players or not, we will always struggle to get into the top 4, the top 6 maybe a more realistic target, but whilst the top few are throwing their millions about trying to buy success we are doing what alot of other teams should be doing by promoting the english youth and developing for the long haul. I am proud that all of the premier leagues top clubs are knocking our door down for our talent and our managers because we're successful without breaking the bank, we have a good solid foundation built on belief and hard graft and we have a vision. It would be great to prove the doubters wrong and have a great 2014/2015 season and make people reflect on the decisions they have made including the "fans?" that are saying that they will walk away before the dust has even settled. I'm sure if the right decisions are made and Saints step up to the mark they will want to be part of it. Through thick and thin people. I have been a fan as long as I can remember, we've been through some really hard times and not more then the recent time before Liebherrs investment, without that investment we probably wouldn't even be here, its been any fans fairytale, to be on the edge of oblivion only to be rescued and invested in and brought back to the top tier within 5 years. Saints didn't sack MP he left, they wanted to keep him, they want to keep our young stars, we do the best with what we have. Whatever manager they pick there are rumours that he will have £50m to spend before any other transfers that may occur, so for me I'm taking the positives from the recent disappointments, none of which the current board could have done anything differently. Onwards and upwards..!

Saints were happy to let Poch speak to Spurs because in the end a new contract was put on the table but MP wanted to leave as he wasn't happy that Cortese had left.

I can only assume with Magath that Les Read is trying garner as much info on all the managers around so we know what we are up against. It seems strange after Kruegar reported that we had been inundated with calls from all over Europe interested in the managers position and all this time passes and we ask Fulham to speak with their manager?? It doesn't add up.

Hopefully Koeman will be appointed and Saints can clear that matter up.

Firstly, lets not forget that the previous manager had a release clause in his contract which HE activated and quit the club.

Secondly, the process of hiring a manager for a football club is not the same as hiring checkout staff at Asda where they interview loads of contenders on the same day and a spotty teenage supervisor picks the ones they like.
A shortlist of candidates has been made, if they are abroad, flights, hotels and times have to be arranged.
An interview at a club would probably take all day if not more. When the people on the shortlist have been interviewed the club will then do an indepth check on them all.
At the end of the process we should have the best man available to be manager of Southampton FC.
While we are managerless, the backroom staff are working their socks off to identify new players to come in. The only worry is that the previous manager also know the targets we are after.
I'm pleased the board are taking their time in appointing a new boss, be patient, it will happen.

I'm not sure which of Koeman, Magath or someone not yet identified would be the best appointment for Saints, but if you compare the records of these two, Magath's is actually head and shoulders above Koeman's.

Either way, Pitball is right, all we can really do is be patient; let's hope the Board gets this right.

I do not mean to be negative but quite simply I cannot find anything about the present set up that inspires confidence its just a catalog of errors, meaningless soundbites and lack of decision.
Now they propose to take possibly another ten days to appoint a manager, why when Koeman ticks all the boxes, unless of course you plan to get rid of all our best players in which case he probably doesnt.
Its preposterous, when the club for the first time in its history has an opportunity to break down the premiership s hierarchy and they do what, behave like lemmings and jump off the nearest cliff?
Katarina, as they say in a Muttley cartoon, DO SOMETHING.
You use the word preposterous.
The only thing that is preposterous is your post!
Behave like lemmings?
Would you prefer a knee-jerk managerial appointment? Great! We can then have a long season to regret a decision made in haste!
Sell our best players? That makes sound financial sense! Make a quick buck now, and, relatively speaking, be left with something worth less! As I've posted before, if all they are interest in is money, then they would sell the club, complete with it's best players, then and ONLY then, would they make a killing!

As I've said many times before all transfers are initiated through the media by players/ managers agents and said agents are only interested in their cut of the fees. A phone call to some newspaper starts the ball rolling and within hours the player/ manager is being asked to comment. With the wages they get these days the players should be paying their agents any due fees and not the clubs. A club having to pay an agent a million pounds for a transfer is about the most obscene act of greed an extortion I can think of for the short time it takes him to negotiate. Let the player him fifty pounds an hour.

Or how about this scenario CPS, maybe Koeman has either asked for more time to think over our offer for him to manage Saints, or even turned it down.

Maybe that is why the board are still looking at other options, in case Koeman eventual says "no" to us or already has.

It wasn't so long ago that several posters on here were **** and moaning about "if the board knew that Poch might be going, why didn't they start talking to other possible replacements earlier?". Well perhaps they are doing just that now, in case our number 1 choice, whoever that might be, turns us down.

Let the board do their job without all the back stabbing and sniping. AND why do many fans on this forum think they have a right to a blow by blow account of what the board are doing each day anyway?

When they have something to tell us, they will!

Aha . Just saw it on a Gossip site. Liverpool seem to be in an unseemly haste about eveything.

A point to consider.
If Liverpool hadn't put in a bid - would anyone else be after him? I'm not so sure. He is a talented star, we all know that, but it seems that Liverpool's bid plus the imminent World Cup has raised his profile so much its now getting out of proportion. Mainly via TV and press.

To a degree the same applies to Shaw.... although I gather more than one club is interested in him.

Taking this into consideration the only hard fact we have about player moves is that Lambert has gone.

A new manager worth his salt will demand to make his imprint as soon as he gets here. The first objective will be to keep key players. If he can motivate and inspire the current players, and add a couple, then the team spirit that has been the foundation of our climb to the Premiership may yet survive.

This may yet all turn out to be a huge storm in a teacup. As I said before, let the Board do its stuff.

In the meantime I intend to enjoy the world cup as far as it goes. I see the usual over exaggerated puffs about our chances of winning are being circulated, its always the way. If we get to the quarter finals it will be a victory in itself. Face it, we just arent good enough. Tough but true.

Is that the time? I think theres a sandwich with my name on it wating for me....

Some on here are judging him on 12 games at Fulham last season. Fulham were already dead in the water and he was brought in for next season.
Seems like he has a reputation for a brutal training regime, not unlike Pochettino.

Could be an interesting choice.

Do not believe what you read in the Mail, Mirror or Echo, because they don't know what is going on inside the club.

Sad really, that the Echo is included in that list. You would think, with them recently having had an interview, with Ralph, that fences were being mended, but maybe not.
If I was in charge of the Echo, I would be pleading with the club, to be trusted as their mouthpiece, so that when rumours surface in the red tops and other media outlets, the a Echo would be the go to place for the true story.

Not for me Gaz. I don’t doubt his record in Europe is impressive and if the season was longer he probably would have kept Fulham up. Without wishing to appear ageist, I want somebody who has more time on their side and potential to grow with a young squad. Koeman is the man for me.

Check skysports, Liverpool quoted that they would move on to other trasfer tragets and they have done, logging a bid for Emre Can and interested in Kevin Strootman. I'm not saying AL will stay I'm saying Liverpool have moved on and they don't have millions to spend. Also spending £16.5M on Sevilla LB.

Where does it say that they are out of the race for AL .. ?[/p]
Correct......does not say they are out of race for AL, so the people who think AL is staying at saints you need to think again.... But you are correct about both clubs agreeing to a price, that will all change when AL comes back from World Cup[/p]
Check skysports, Liverpool quoted that they would move on to other trasfer tragets and they have done, logging a bid for Emre Can and interested in Kevin Strootman. Southampton manager Mark Wotte is determined not to let forward Adam Lallana leave on the cheap.

Wolves have already had a £500,000 bid for the 21-year-old rejected with the Saints looking for a considerably higher offer.

The youngster was linked with a move to Tottenham in the early stages of last season but in the end mustered just two goals in all competitions as the South Coast club were relegated from the Championship.

Lallana has refused to play in the club's two pre-season games to date after telling Wotte he wants to leave.

"There is some interest for him and he would like to join a club in the Championship or Premier League," Wotte told the Daily Star.

Quality player

"But as I have said before, we are not going to sell Adam Lallana for a cheap price. He is a quality player.

"So if there is a club interested they have to do serious business and not try to take advantage of the situation."

However, the League One club are now in a position to dictate terms. Having successfully been taken over on Wednesday they do not have to sell in an effort to improve their perilous financial situation.

so he has asked to leave the club before and refused to play in pre-season games, sounds all to familiar doesn't it. maybe hes not as loyal as we thought.
he wanted to leave and was told no, and hes happy he didn't leave. who know where we might be in 4yrs time!
I find it remarkable that his value has gone from just over £500k to £25-£30mill in those few short years! how would allmouth fans have felt if we had sold him for £500k? they would have bee given £125k, and now they want us to sell so they can get £6mill.

Its preposterous, when the club for the first time in its history has an opportunity to break down the premiership s hierarchy and they do what, behave like lemmings and jump off the nearest cliff?
Katarina, as they say in a Muttley cartoon, DO SOMETHING.
sure, lets rush a decision on the first guy that appears to tick all the boxes. If it was 10m of your own money, would you be so hasty? Jeez

The next managerial appointment is THE most important decision for SFC bar none (e.g. more important than the futures of Adam and Luke). I think Ralph is absolutely right in taking time to assess those on the short list and then negotiate the best deal for the club. If that process take 2 weeks, so be it. They have already said there will be no further transfer business until the appointment is made so this press fueled exodus of players is just not going to happen. Have patience

Wow! This really is an eye opener. Talk about deja vu.

Apparently Can deal is signed sealed and delivered according to Skiverpool and Sky Sports News.

Interesting to see how this one all pans outs.

Schittspurs have signed their left back so that's them out of the picture for Shaw for certain.

The doors are closing on them but can't bring myself to feel anything but contempt for our so-called captain. If this is his measure put him out on loan to get some of his wages paid, let him fester for a year and see if he can then find a "Bigger" club than ours. His disdain for his faithful followers is clear and this young man needs bringing down a peg or two.
In case you haven't worked it out Adam there are some of us who are less than pleased with your demeanour - you could have stopped this all with one little statement. "I am the proud captain of Southampton FC and I am going nowhere until my contract is finished"
Shouldn't have been too difficult a choice to make for a man of substance.

Interesting. Where does it say that they are out of the race for AL .. ?
Correct......does not say they are out of race for AL, so the people who think AL is staying at saints you need to think again....
But you are correct about both clubs agreeing to a price, that will all change when AL comes back from World Cup
your right about one thing his price will change after the world cup, it will rise.

I really like the look of this guy. Ideal replacement for SRL and could be a good mentor for Sam.
He's got a few more real classy players there. In fact one is called Clasie. There's 3 defenders who would be ideal for us - be nice if we could turn all this round into the positive and end up with a bevvy of young Dutch starlets.

Not for me Gaz. I don’t doubt his record in Europe is impressive and if the season was longer he probably would have kept Fulham up. Without wishing to appear ageist, I want somebody who has more time on their side and potential to grow with a young squad. Koeman is the man for me.

Okay we get the point. Magath is undeniably pretty good. If Magath had 64% with say Hertha Bsc I'd be rooting for you and your notion. However, I suspect you could get 64% with Bayern in that league.

If what is true that Fulham has said hands off then it's not worth considering it any further anyway.

So who do you fancy out of those still in contention?

TAKEN FROM SKY SPORTS WEBSITE!

“I might not be here today if I'd left when Southampton went into administration,”

TAKEN FROM THE ECHO!

so he has asked to leave the club before and refused to play in pre-season games, sounds all to familiar doesn't it. maybe hes not as loyal as we thought.
he wanted to leave and was told no, and hes happy he didn't leave. who know where we might be in 4yrs time!
I find it remarkable that his value has gone from just over £500k to £25-£30mill in those few short years! how would allmouth fans have felt if we had sold him for £500k? they would have bee given £125k, and now they want us to sell so they can get £6mill.

I guess this post is based on media hogwash, but theres no hiding from the fact that Ralph stated that we are a more "transparent club" post cortese, and his dersire to connect with the fan-base was his driving force. after july 1st there will be more transfer dealings and it usually takes 1 big move to kick everything off, suspect it will be suarez moving this summer.

Perhaps you are waiting for Real Madrid to come in and buy "Goofy" and then you will have the money to make a real offer for Ads. ( By the way when you sell Goofy the price for Ads will go up again).

I was just about to say the same. Sherwood has come right down on betfair. I am not sure how it works? I imagine either someone gets a snippet of info so puts a sizeable bet on and the other bookies react. Or an article has appeared so money goes on. It's actually a good little scam if you are a newspaper or blogger. Buy at long odds, circulate a rumour then sell up at much shorter odds. Either way Sherwood would be a complete disaster - I'm sold on Big Ron but really anyone over Sherwood - even McLaren.

Magath wouldn't be the worst outcome, not now I am stressing over Sherwood anyway. As for Lallana I can't help but feel everyone is being a bit harsh on him, at 26 he is faced with a choice: to continue to stay loyal to our very good club or take a step up and play at a top top club. Even as a die hard Saint I would at least think about my options. Add to this he is currently wrapped up in the England camp excited about the world cup I can't see what he has done so wrong - sign a young lads shirt? So what? Even LeGod thought about going to Chelsea. If Adam's decision ends up being stay at Saints there is no doubt he will be worshipped. I think a lot depends on who we get in as Boss and the intention of the board. Shaw on the other hand shouldn't even think about leaving at this stage of his career.

Ralph you talk a good talk so take a flight to Italy and convince Rafa Benitez to come. If you can sell it to him it will show the real ambition to move forward. Rafa would convince Adam etc to stay and attract top players. Rafa wants to come back to the Premiership and we would recover his high salary in no time, so don't go for cheaper options.
GO GET RAFA BENITEZ NOW.

I havent posted on here for a while-quite a while in fact, but this post sums it all up for me,totally agree, this club means the world to me, yep wish lambo all the best, but the rest, grow a pair and man up,SFC have made you what you are,England internationals,be grateful ,give this club the respect it deserves. I guess this post is based on media hogwash, but theres no hiding from the fact that Ralph stated that we are a more "transparent club" post cortese, and his dersire to connect with the fan-base was his driving force. Well Ive yet to see it.
Im hoping for a world class manager, who can persuade any faint hearts that this club I adore is worth playing for-I live in hope and will never lose the faith. This club was here before me and will be long after any career jockeys have moved on.

There were two stewards stood outside the door and a silver long wheel base mercedes with tinted rear windows waiting outside?

I did, and you know what I concluded, that he considered leaving before but was the only one bar Morgan who stayed and we went on to worship him as he played brilliantly for us. Same as Saurez last summer for Liverpool. If he wears a Saints shirt in Sept all will be cool. If he goes then personally I will understand, but be gutted. Shaw is different IMO because of his age, there should be no rush.

It was Ian Dowie come down to see if we wanted him to cure Lallana of his current outbreak of twattism.

No wrong, it won't be cool for all of us. He is contracted (only recently contracted) to us and happy to have signed that contract to say he would give his football skills and accept the captaincy of our club in return for X amount of shekels per week. Possibly more than I can earn in a year.
Now the first sniff that the length of his contract is proving inconvenient to his personal ambitions as opposed to his personal responsibility (which is to see out his contract to the best of his ability) he has decided he can backtrack, treat those who have paid his wages for years with open and cynical contempt and flit away to his chest of gold and there will be no consquences for his lapse in judgement and standards. Well let's hope there are consequences and this arrogant young man has to face them.

I'm sorry but that wasn't the case back then, it wasn't the case with letissier, it wasn't the case with any contracted player we have ever bought from another club and it won't be the case if Lallana decides he will play with skill and passion like he has for 8 years next season. I still don't quite get what he has done so wrong that he deserves such venom. Please rationally explain, because I don't get it.

Then you clearly have not been reading the posts concerning bygone times and our staunch capt. Suggest you read back through the posts and ask yourself the questions again.
No wrong, it won't be cool for all of us. He is contracted (only recently contracted) to us and happy to have signed that contract to say he would give his football skills and accept the captaincy of our club in return for X amount of shekels per week. Possibly more than I can earn in a year.

I keep telling people, Saints is being stripped of cash then sold! Its horrible but true!

Just read a report about the supposed Hernandez-Shaw deal in which it says:

"United have been pursuing Shaw for a long time, but have failed to arrive at a successful conclusion EITHER WITH THE PLAYER or with the Saints' hierarchy." (CAPS are mine)

Obviously they are no more informed than most of us, but could it be that even Shaw hasn't agreed terms with Utd yet? Maybe he's not satisfied with what they're offering.

Correct......does not say they are out of race for AL, so the people who think AL is staying at saints you need to think again....
But you are correct about both clubs agreeing to a price, that will all change when AL comes back from World Cup
Dude I know all of this, what was the statement from your chairman? No deals will happen until new manager is in place that's the reason.....and for the record we have 70mill plus and TV money from last season

You need to get a life AL does not owe any of you saints fans anything he has done his service since he was 12yrs old, and now he wants to move on with "his" career, you lot need to get over yourselves you sad cases!

Having successfully been taken over on Wednesday they do not have to sell in an effort to improve their perilous financial situation.

he wanted to leave and was told no, and hes happy he didn't leave. who know where we might be in 4yrs time!
I find it remarkable that his value has gone from just over £500k to £25-£30mill in those few short years! how would allmouth fans have felt if we had sold him for £500k? they would have bee given £125k, and now they want us to sell so they can get £6mill.

You need to get a life AL does not owe any of you saints fans anything he has done his service since he was 12yrs old, and now he wants to move on with "his" career, you lot need to get over yourselves you sad cases!

Interesting. Where does it say that they are out of the race for AL .. ?
Correct......does not say they are out of race for AL, so the people who think AL is staying at saints you need to think again....
But you are correct about both clubs agreeing to a price, that will all change when AL comes back from World Cup
As you are currently only offering £15m + some joke add ons for Ads, it is Diverpool that will have to increase their offer to get him.
.
Perhaps you are waiting for Real Madrid to come in and buy "Goofy" and then you will have the money to make a real offer for Ads. ( By the way when you sell Goofy the price for Ads will go up again).
You sound abut bitter lol you got no manager, no lambert, no lallana soon, no shaw, we'll there is Felix as a bright spark lol :) good luck with that!

With the odds for the next manager all over the place, it looks like we will be waiting for at least another week for solid news. In the mean time, mentioning no names, do we want a young unproved but eager manager, an experienced but possibly tired and outdated one, or one with some experience, ready to take on a bigger challenge with more resources than they have been previously given? Any lessons from the past?

I know is off subject but Tim Sherwood's odds have dropped to be our manager from 33/1 to 6/1 while Ronald Koeman odds have gone from 1/2 to 4/6….
Now I would like Tim as I know he will be long long term with no premadonna's like @ tottenham while Koeman will probably be a 2 season coach before he himself will move as his history shows.
But I would't be too worried if either coached/ managed, as long as its done soon

1976 - I really do want to believe what you're posting and I hope we are all getting het up over nothing in particular. I would even write to Lallana apologizing for doubting his credibility and honesty.
Logic should dictate that none of us should believe a single thing we hear or think we see until the ink is dry and either Shaw or Lallana are pulling on the shirt of another club but since when has football been about logic? If we were logical about it we just wouldn't get involved with it all for a couple of years until football agreed to take its collective heads out of their collective arises and started treating the fans as their prime asset and not as it is now shirt/boot/advertisi
ng/ companies and of course the prima donna players who are strangling the game.
Any chickens I sacrifice today will be done to appease the gods in the hope your assessment is 100% right and everything I fear is 100% wrong.
Thanks for giving an old man hope.

No, it's not a joke but even a Liverpool fan would laugh at that list.

Looking at their overall careers and in time to impose his own preseason magath could well prove to be more shrewd than koeman. Happy with either tbh. I think lallana to Liverpool ain't gonna happen and he's hasn't endeared himself to us recently so not sure what will happen there
Magath wouldn't be the worst outcome, not now I am stressing over Sherwood anyway.
Then you clearly have not been reading the posts concerning bygone times and our staunch capt. Suggest you read back through the posts and ask yourself the questions again.
And I guess you never will. You are entitled to your opinion and I will defend your right to do so, it's what makes a forum like this interesting.
I never will if you can't explain it. If he goes without the same respect Lambert showed I will reassess but presently I have not heard one quote from him. Of course he's tempted by Liverpool, fair enough, but at least wait till he actually does something before slating, that's all I am saying.
It's his body language - ask Clattenberg.

IMO, Ricky should not have left at this time. What was the rush? Hodgson and his bloody "get your transfers sorted". The idiot.
