Saints midfielder Victor Wanyama insists he has been misquoted, after suggestions he could be keen on an exit from the club.

In an interview with Nairobi-based Capital Sport, the Kenyan apparently spoke about playing for a side in the Champions League.

“I will be happy to play in any team that is in the Champions League, that’s my aim, I wanted to face a new challenge in English Premier League and now that I’ve conquered it, very soon I will be going back to playing in the biggest tournament in the world,” he is quoted as saying.

Wanyama also went on to describe the loss of Mauricio Pochettino this week as a “big blow” and said “the owners should not have let him go”.

This afternoon, Wanyama moved to dampen the reaction to the words, writing on his Twitter page: “I have been miss quoted [sic] they didn't get my point”.

The 22-year-old did not expand on which part of the interview he was unhappy about.

Disgusting journalism,
is it not good enough, that he stated he had been misquoted, or are you like the rest of the gutter press looking for anything that may destabilise the club?

No wonder Nicola Cortese banned you, I hope the new board do too!

I was going to make a comment, but I think the lack of comments under this article kind of says it all. Not sure where to file this rumour in my list of summer concerns, but nice of Victor to at least deny it.

Perhaps I should expand to explain why your comment is moronic.

Wanyama is quoted saying he's sad to see Poch go
He is also quoted saying he is going to be soon in the Champions League
Then he says he has been misquoted.
He doesn't say what he has been misquoted about.

Then you attack the Echo for reporting all of this, after the fact. How this is disgusting journalism, I'll never know. Disgusting journalism is paying a prostitute to tell about her night with a singer, or lying about someone being a rapist or murderer.

This is a report about something a footballer said.

Are you suggesting they shouldn't actually have to pay the prostitute?

The Echo almost certainly didn't interview Wanyama. I doubt they have reporters in Kenya. That means the sources that they based their earlier article are the misquoters. The Echo's misdeed was simply to reproduce what they said.

Personally, I'm rather pleased that he has chosen to deny it. It suggests that we might not be looking at serious mass indignation and anger among the players.

For once I can safely say I couldn't give a monkeys about this particular story. Misquoted or not cannot think he is good enough for CL. The jury is still out on VW as far as I am concerned.

With all the hype following Poch going he certainly did not excel in the 'buying of players market'. Lovren being the only exception.

Except the Echo never reported the comments about Wanyama wanting to leave, until they reported the fact he was denying the comments.

This is exactly the same "misquoting " that went on when Luke Shaw tweeted about MP leaving. All he said was he learned a lot from him. This was then reported in all the media (including the DE ) to say that he was so unhappy he wanted a move

Where did the Echo say that then?

As this what they reported (6.56pm) about Luke Shaw's tweet. http://www.dailyecho

A lot of people here seem to be making up stuff about the DE, which is all a bit weird, if you ask me - especially when you can just search for the articles to check what was reported.

I'm the person who used Luke Shaw's tweet in the Echo's live blog (which someone has posted a link to above) and you can clearly see there is nothing there to say Luke Shaw is unhappy and wants to leave.

Not sure how the system works, but I access this site daily as a lot of die-hard Saints fans do. The adverts are all from large Canadian companies. This tells me two things:-

1 - gossip and speculation, whether true or false, and the opinions pushed out by the Daily Echo sell Ad space wherever we are.

2 - there must be a lot of people in North Amerca who follow the Saints
