4:59pm

Saints end a two-game losing run in the league with a victory here at Selhurst Park. This was certainly not a classic, but Mauricio Pochettino's side will take it. Jay Rodriguez's 13th goal of the season separated the sides. Saints remain ninth in the table, but are through the 40-point barrier, now with 42. Thanks for joining us today. We'll have a full report and reaction on the website for you soon.

4:56pm

CRYSTAL PALACE 0 SAINTS 1

4:50pm

Saints: Steven Davis off, James Ward-Prowse on (88 mins).

4:50pm

Nathaniel Clyne cautioned for handball (88 mins).

4:45pm

Palace: Yannick Bolasie off, Jerome Thomas on (82 mins).

4:40pm

Saints: Rickie Lambert off, Sam Gallagher on (75 mins).

4:36pm

CHANCE (73 mins): Luke Shaw drives forward and fires in a low shot that is held by Julian Speroni.

4:30pm

Palace: Kagisho Dikgacoi and Jason Puncheon off, Cameron Jerome and Tom Ince on (66 mins).

4:28pm

Morgan Schneiderlin booked for a strong tackle on Mile Jedinak (65 mins).

4:25pm

Crystal Palace's Yannick Bolasie is tackled by Southampton's Dejan Lovren.

Basingstoke Gazette:

4:20pm

CHANCE (53 mins): After Jedinak's foul on Schneiderlin, Rickie Lambert tries his luck with a 25-yard free-kick. As normal with him, it's well struck. However, on this occasion, it bends over the wall and goes wide of the near post.

4:19pm

Mile Jedinak booked for pulling back Morgan Schneiderlin (52 mins).

4:17pm

Steven Davis booked for a blatant trip on Joe Ledley (50 mins).

4:13pm

Crystal Palace's Joel Ward (left) and Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne battle for the ball

Basingstoke Gazette:

4:11pm

Dejan Lovren cautioned for bringing down Yannick Bolasie. Lovren might feel fortunate not to have been sent off there. Bolasie went on a great run through the heart of Saints' defence, going past Victor Wanyama and Jose Fonte, before poking the ball past the Croatian, who was last man. Lovren slid in and fouled Bolasie, but Howard Webb opted to show only a yellow card, as Nathaniel Clyne was racing back to try and intercept. (48 mins).

4:04pm

The second half is underway.

4:01pm

Jay Rodriguez's goal - the only one currently seperating the two teams.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0 SAINTS 1

3:49pm

CHANCE (45+3 mins): A corner is cleared only as far as Yannick Bolasie on the edge of the area. He drills in a fierce low strike that flies through a crowd of bodies, but is well stopped by Artur Boruc.

3:49pm

Jose Fonte cautioned for a foul on Joe Ledley (45+2 mins).

3:48pm

CHANCE (45+1 mins): Adam Lallana's cross to the back post is dealt with terribly by Joel Ward. He heads the ball straight to Rickie Lambert just inside the edge of the area, and the Saints striker produces a superb first-time strike that angles past Julian Speroni, but hits the far post.

3:45pm

Southampton's Jose Fonte (left) in action with Crystal Palace's Glenn Murray.

Basingstoke Gazette:

3:40pm

CRYSTAL PALACE 0 SAINTS 1 (Jay Rodriguez 37)

A loose header on the halfway line from ex-Saint Jason Puncheon is pounced on by Jay Rodriguez. He sprints clear, and slides in for a 50-50 challenge with Palace keeper Julian Speroni 25 yards out. Rodriguez wins it and, while pretty much flat on his back, strokes the ball into the empty net.

3:37pm

Saints: Jack Cork off, Victor Wanyama on. Cork landed awkwardly on his ankle and has been forced off. Initially a stretcher was called for, but the midfielder was able to walk off the pitch and down the tunnel. (34 mins).

3:33pm

CHANCE (28 mins): Not so much of a chance, as a good block from Damien Delaney. A nice move from Saints starts with Luke Shaw sprinting forward down the left. Adam Lallana then takes the ball, plays it inside to Steven Davis, who slides it further across into the path of Jay Rodriguez, whose shot back across goal is blocked by Delaney.

3:23pm

Midway through the first half at Selhurst Park and, well, the less said about this one the better. No real chances to speak of for either side yet.

3:05pm

CHANCE (2 mins): Adam Lallana chips a ball in from the right, towards Jay Rodriguez just outside the area. He lines up a right-footed volley and, although he catches it reasonably well, it is well off target.

3:00pm

Referee Howard Webb gets the match underway.

2:57pm

Basingstoke Gazette: Tony Pulis wants to bring in new recruits this January

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis this week had some kind words to say about Saints and their academy. For the full story click here.

They’ve done it consistently for a long time. They haven’t just stumbled over it. They’ve got the jigsaw sorted out, and the pieces are in the right place.

Basingstoke Gazette: Luke Shaw

Four of Saints' players were away on senior duty with England this week. Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana were the only ones to get on the pitch, though. Both of those did their chances of making the World Cup plenty of good. Mauricio Pochettino believes that both of those players, as well as Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez, have a good chance of earning a place in Brazil this summer. Click here for the full story.

Clutterburke is reffing the arsenal Everton game and has just given a handball against Everton that looked a lot less of a handball than the one he denied us at Everton. I really am starting to think that theres something very dodgy about him!

Anyway, good strong team today with options on the bench. Glad to see all our players have come back from their international duties fit and well.

We knew this was going to be another tough game, we don't normally do well against teams who play that way. We seemed to come down to their level today and played a scrappy game. A win is a win though and its great to get 3pts on the board again.
Just wish we could get the ball into the box a dit quicker as we play too many passes around the edge.

And there they go the marvellous Southampton, winners one and all..Crystal palace had no answer to the scintillating skill and dexterity of a glorious side..
..One can only imagine the fantastic potential of this team with a Dixie Dean no need for Stanley Matthews though, the erstwhile wizard of the wing has been replaced by the apprentice and what an apprentice Adam Lallana the new maestro, it's not all over just yet though among our brave boys one cannot fail to mention the attitude skill and all round bulldog spirit of Shaw..Hail Southampton a team to rule the waves…end of pathè news.

leaning against an open door here, I love the way we play. It can be utterly sublime to watch and pretty much every other fan I've met this season has been very complimentary about how we have played. (except the token skate at work, mind you no one really understands the grunts and whines that escape his lips - we usually just give him a broom and get him to sweep the yard)

but we do need to combine the pretty play with some ugly stuff so that, even if we aren't getting much in their penalty area, they aren't getting anything in ours.

I think Wanyama when he was in the swing of things was doing this very well. that injury has really knocked him for six - I feel that there is a confidence issue there. In the matches running up to that injury he was simply awesome after shaky start to the season. The one thing he kept doing was giving away easy passes until he got up to PL speed.

Not being there, sadly, possession at 64%, which is about usual, still yields only one goal. This must be against all the odds and reasonably you could assume such dominance would yield at least 2 or 3 goals.

I don't really understand the situation, but it does show that this is an area which needs attention in the summer.

But, rejoice, 9th , safe and more than most were expecting last August - THAT IS WE ARE HONEST!! Well done, Saints, well done, really well done.

We love you all and we are happy bunnies, oh! yes we are!

Yep, although that FA Cup draw still makes me sad, especially in a season when we're producing record breaking away form.

Possession can be misleading if a team is a goal or two down though - the opposition tends to sit back and let a team dominate possession if there is no penetration.

In our case though we're doing loads of things right but two things need to improve: we need to stop gifting easy goals, mainly from individual mistakes; we need to take our chances more ruthlessly.

Only problem is, as I've said before, our high tempo pressing game is great but it does open us to individual mistakes (MP actually says he's happy for players to get caught now and again as long as they are showing bravery) and Jay-Rod and Adam in particular are working so hard that I honestly don't think they have the puff to finish things off sometimes.

Jay is particularly frustrating because you lose count of the times he does something brilliant and then rushes his shot.

And of course what the Man City stats really show and what Saints stats similarly illustrate, is that you can have all the possession and class in the world, but if you have one player who isn't quite up to that level either physicallly or mentally, it will cost you a lot of matches.

I'd say the same is true to a smaller extent with us in terms of someone of absolute class to go alongside Lovren at the back.

Then, if you have someone of absolute world class up front (as Liverpool did with Suarez vs us the other night) - you sort that problem as well.

Easier said than done though, but that's the small margin that will make our next big step forward (subject to us keeping our squad together this summer.

Personally, now, I don't want to see anyone leave, regardless of price offered.

If we need to sell to invest we have Dani and Gaston who could generate the funds we need to invest in the team - even a silly amount for Luke isn't worth it unless he is desperate to leave.
