MANAGER Russell Martin confirmed Ross Stewart is set to return to the Saints squad next weekend at Leeds United.

The 27 year old has only made two brief substitute appearances in an injury-ruined debut season at St Mary's.

Stewart, signed from Sunderland for £10million on summer deadline day, arrived on the south coast with a long-term Achilles concern.

A hamstring injury in the draw at Huddersfield in November has rendered him out of action since.

However, supporters might catch another glimpse of the forward at Elland Road during the final day of the Championship season.

Martin said: "Yeah, all being well, Ross will be on the bench next week against Leeds.

"Hopefully, fingers crossed, he's come through training really nicely. He'll have a big session in the morning and then have Sunday to recover.

"He will then be fully with the squad next week. So, all being well, we look forward to having Ross in the squad."

Stewart, who scored 10 goals in 13 Championship matches for Sunderland last season, would represent backup to Che Adams in the playoffs.

The former Black Cats striker scored at Wembley in the League One playoff final in 2022, after netting 24 in the regular season and in the semi-final.

Stewart will not be an option for Saints in their final home game of the regular league season, against Stoke City.
