Vlaar debate reignites

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is widely reported to have criticised Southampton boss Ronald Koeman over his supposed public chase of defender Ron Vlaar – even though the Saints manager last week clarified that he is not interested in signing the centre half.

Koeman has been quoted by a Dutch news outlet praising Vlaar, who he managed at Feyenoord, when asked about his World Cup performances during the club’s pre-season tour but has since clarified his comments and signed Florin Gardos, which he confirmed last week had solved his centre half dilemma.

When asked about Vlaar last Friday, the Saints manager explained: “No, that’s not true, because we signed Gardos, and that’s it.

“That rumour was when I was in the pre-season in Belgium and the journalist of the television of Holland asked me about the situation of Vlaar and we spoke about Vlaar and of the World Cup, because I know the player.

“I had the player at Feyenoord and he is a great central defender.

“Of course, he was one of the names on our list, but now we are happy to have Florin Gardos in and now nothing more to others, even Ron Vlaar.”

However, Lambert has today been quoted as saying: “I think he is disrespecting when talking about other team's players when they are still their players," he said. "I think that's wrong.

"I wouldn't mind if he picked up the phone, but you don't go public on it. That's the thing that annoyed me the most and the stance is still exactly the same with Ron."

Basingstoke Gazette:

Vlaar (bove centre) joined Villa in a £3m move from Feyenoord in 2012 and helped them to a 1-0 opening-day win at Stoke in the Premier League on Saturday.

And Lambert insisted the 29-year-old's performance proved he was not distracted by speculation over his future.

"I don't have a problem. You saw Ron play on Saturday, he was fantastic for us so I don't think anything like that is preying on his mind at all," said the Scot.

"I just thought it was the wrong thing to have done."

Just a thought but Tin-Tin is new to the UK and might comfortably socialise with Dutch players/Trainers etc. in this Country as we would if we had a small enclave of Brits in the depths of Outer Mongolia or even Holland.

On the other hand.......

But who cares anyway

That's not reignited surely? Looks like a journalist asking him the same question about an old story and him repeating what he'd already said.

I'd say it's a journalist stirring up what is essentially an old news story.

Of course I'd love it if he was seriously interested in coming here, but I don't think Ron is lying when he says we're done with centre backs, regardless of whether fans think we need one. By the looks of it we are happy with the cover we've got and want to give youth a chance in the event of injury problems.

I agree. Whilst Lambert is right that officials and players should not covet players from opposing teams Ron's comments on Vlaar are nothing compared to what Brendon Rodgers has been getting up to: salary offers by text to Lallana whilst he's a Saints player and faxing Rickie to congratulate him on his England debut (as posted in yesterday's echo). It's wrong and should be investigated by the Premier League.

I think he has bigger worries at Villa than some rumour which has been put to bed. Villa have been dismal under his management and with the future of the club up in the air, probably best if he concentrates on other matters!

I'm afraid this is the way football works now. Managers praise and openly talk about interest in other players, sometimes in hope it will unsettle the player and the player will then force a move away. Unfortunatley we have been a victim of this more than anyone.
I wish some of our former players showed the same amount of loyalty Ron Vlaar has shown to Villa. No sulking, just getting on with his job.
As for Paul Lambert he just needs to get a life. Mourinho, Wenger, Rogers... they all do it.

Good point and well presented sir.

Rambo admits to discussing Vlaar with a journo he is not tapping him up or unsettling him. This all took place a couple of weeks ago why is Limpwrist bringing it all up again now for?

The whole bloody club is for sale (though no one wants it) So where is the problem. Perhaps he fears the sack and wants a built in excuse for failure - he wouldn't do that though surely?

We'll come back for him at Xmas when you're being pressured by the chairman because he's losing dinero and over foot. Perhaps you'd like to call Rambo mend a fence or two and beg him nicely to remove Vlaar from your diminishing wage bill and have him on ours instead.

Mr Sports editor,im my opine the Saints should forget Vlaar.
He was nothing special last season in the Premer league.
So what he had a decent world cup,but he had world class defenders to support him.At Villa last season he was found wanting.
Let the over rated Villa manager keep him,if the Saints need cover at
c/b there is far better out there. After Sundays game, the Saints should be a bit more ambitious in then Vlaar.
The manager has stated he does not need another c/b but a winger is called for. Again not the Spurs winger just a one trick pony, there is better out there.
Sundays game showed the Saints have nothing to fear, and its going to be an exciting journey in 2014/15

I think that Paul Lambert is either paranoid or is trying to resist possible transfer approaches by making it seem that RonKo has been unprofessional and hoping that it will put off Ron Vlaar from completing a transfer away from Villa. It also may have been cooked up by Vlaar's agent to get more interest and a higher bid - we've seen enough of that in this transfer window! Now to defend our manager. Early last week he answered this criticism. He said that he had only spoken once, after one of our pre-season matches in Belgium or The Netherlands, speaking to a Dutch interviewer who asked him about several Dutch players including Ron Vlaar being possible targets for Southampton. RonKo said Vlaar would be a very good player for Saints. He denies speaking about this on any other occasion and the media and Paul Lambert have made a mountain out of a mole-hill. RonKo has shown nothing but utter respect and professionalism in this whole affair. In fact he despises open publicity like this and was quick to criticise Lovren and later Morgan for going public. I hope Paul Lambert apologises for his bad behaviour and disrespect towards our manager.

I'm a bit concerned that RonKo thinks we are OK at CB. It will be a big gamble to start the season without signing a top quality CB. We need four to cover for injuries and suspensions.
I am afraid that Hoover is just not up to the level and should be off-loaded. Yoshida does OK most of the time but always seems to have a few lapses and does not dominate at the back so would be 4th choice.

Gardos is an unknown at this level, will he be another Lovren, Hoover or Forren ? problem is the window will be shut by the time he is fit.

Jose did improve last season and looked OK against Liverpool but he & Cline did not pick Sterling up. We were saying that we needed a better CB to partner Lovren, nothing has changed. Also I don't believe that any of the youngsters will be up to it just yet, it is the one position you can't risk them in.

What happens if Gardos is no better than Yoshida and Jose gets injured or suspended ? Waiting until January will be too late so better sign another BC now.

Phillip Wollsheid, van Dijk, or young Terrance Kongolo are all available if the older Ron Vlaar is not available.

I would make another CB the priority followed by a proven Goalscorer, over a winger.

Vlaar is getting older and towards the end of his contract so shouldn't cost much.

How do you know about the salary offer to Lallana?
I have to confess that his hasn' come from me but came from a source who claims to have grown up with Lallana in Bournemouth and he said he was shown the text and is adamant that it's 100% genuine. Apparenly it happened not long after he made his England debut.

It's an interesting read. Sounds plausible. But, so do some other versions. I'll just try to keep an open mind.
Here is article quoted above.
Interesting to say the least.

the rickie bit for those who don't want to twitter.
Just heard Rickie is mortified & saddened at the way his words have been twisted by media & has contacted club to apologise, #SaintsFC

@Walldweller more evidence of the agenda against club & owner by certain media hacks, once again lazy cut & paste, @BenSmithBBC next!

@bdsspw same as me, I just saw a bloke trying not to cause any upset but media seem determined to twist his words, Mirror at it now
here's his earlier replies which don't show unless you click on the tweets and replies tab

@UrbanWordsmith think will see very different story from Rickie when packs in, looked very uneasy when words came out, same agent as AL, DL

@UrbanWordsmith Gerrard was part of the tap up, heard that Brenda also visited AL at his house on more than one occasion from last jan

@UrbanWordsmith Moyes met Shaw at parents house, Chambers tapped up with Eng U19 squad at St George's Park by Wenger, others also tapped

@UrbanWordsmith Pochettino was a lot of the problem, some senior players approached board to tell them he was stringing them along

@UrbanWordsmith heard some disturbing stuff from the training ground that he was telling younger players to go, telling them too good for us

@UrbanWordsmith board guilty of nativity at first but wised up in time, KL determined club will succeed, she will not sell to Poch or spuds

@UrbanWordsmith anti saints journos will get no favours from club, monitor media & social feeds, know what is going on & who's behind it all

@UrbanWordsmith all stuff I have been told recently, up to people what they want to believe, some will love it, some won't, that's life!

@UrbanWordsmith absolutely, looks like Cortese's exit strategy was to f**k everything up, binned kit deal, slowed down training gr, etc.

@UrbanWordsmith been told some young ones in academy, JWP, HR, SG all approached but told Les Reed, bound to have been others....

@UrbanWordsmith NC wanted massive pay off, got paid rest of contract only, I shared railway carriage with KL lawyers day after he went..

@UrbanWordsmith they sat there shaking their heads at his behaviour, didn't realise my German ain't bad! Understood about 70%,....

@UrbanWordsmith clammed up when they realised I understood what they were saying, decided there & then that KL needed our support

@UrbanWordsmith he did a lot for our club & his single minded ruthless style was needed to keep the t**ts who had dragged us down away

@UrbanWordsmith but he also paid himself very well, way more than the market value, never developed the commercial side, ignored clubs roots

@UrbanWordsmith he was not the great business man people think he was, as a club we could never sustain his vanity or vision, time was up

@UrbanWordsmith at the end of the day just another employee of the club like Rupert, consigned to history, draw a line move on, bye bye etc.

@UrbanWordsmith oh yeah but then the so called elite have sewn up the PL, FA weak, media not prepared to investigate, rather pull us apart

Paul Lambert seems to have a very short memory!

Thu 23 Jan 14 by Mick Dennis
Norwich City have complained formally to Aston Villa about their pursuit of Wes Hoolahan – and have received a curt reply.

The exchange of letters between the two clubs demonstrates the deterioration of relations between them and explains why Norwich, who have rejected a transfer request from Hoolahan, are especially determined not to sell him to Villa.

Norwich wrote complaining that Villa manager Paul Lambert had publicly extolled Hoolahan’s ability, despite the Norfolk club saying he is not for sale. Villa wrote back merely acknowledging the receipt of the Norwich letter and “noting its contents”.
Aston Villa continue their pursuit of the Norwich City midfielder.

It was widely reported that Norwich had rejected a £1.5m bid for the player, which was followed by reports that Hoolahan had handed in a transfer request.

The Canaries denied those claims, but Lambert has come out to speak of his admiration for his former player, although he refused to discuss a potential transfer.

"When I was the manager at Norwich he was fantastic. He was a big player, he was excellent, but he's Norwich's player so there's no point talking about him," Lambert told the Birmingham Mail.

"Wes is a really good player. I had some great players there, the time I was there was a really enjoyable time. We had a lot of success and he was one of many who did excellent for us.

"There's no point me talking about other people's players when they're still at other clubs. I won't disrespect anybody on that front."

So he is allowed to talk about a player his club were bidding for, whilst saying he wont talk about other teams players, yet Ronnie isn't allowed to say a player had a good world cup and while he may have been on a short list we have may no offers and have since said we don't want him?
Double standards to say the least!
I think the echo or a national paper should remind Lambert of his past!
I bet the staff and fans of Norwich had to do a double take when they saw this.
Its a bit rich for a manager who has had an official complaint made against him to spout off carp like this, especially as all Ronnie did was compliment a player from his own country for playing well in the world cup, and after Ronnie made it clear he wasn't trying to sign the player.
Did Lambert 'pick up the phone' to talk to his former club? I doubt it after the way he left, they would probably hung up on him, and I hope we did the same to spuds when they asked about spider!
Lambert is still the villa manager just because the owner has lost all interest and is desperate to sell, with no offers.
