Saints' first game of the Ronald Koeman era ended in a narrow defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool at Anfield.

Reds striker Daniel Sturridge shouldered the responsibility as Liverpool's new main man up front with a late winner.

With last season's 31-goal star Luis Suarez having departed to Barcelona for £75m there is a shortfall to be accounted for - but Sturridge and the Reds' other scorer Raheem Sterling showed they are up for the challenge.

Such was Suarez's brilliance it is almost forgotten Sturridge was the Premier League's second highest scorer with 24 last season - but without his world-class partner beside him there is a greater burden on him to deliver.

With the England striker having a relatively quiet 80 minutes it seemed Saints would leave Anfield with at least a point after Nathaniel Clyne's second-half equaliser, only for the 24-year-old to pounce on his first clear-cut chance.

There had been significant change for both sides over the summer. Liverpool spent upwards of £100m on eight new signings, while their opponents were still in debit having seen a raft of departures - three players to Anfield and manager Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham.

Related links

Only five of Saints' starting line-up started their final match of last season, with four players making their debuts and new £12m striker Shane Long on the bench.

The most significant absenteefor Liverpool, however, was Suarez. However, a year ago Liverpool began the season without the suspended Uruguayan and took 10 points from their first four matches.

While a suitable replacement up front still remains a target for Brendan Rodgers, arguably his most important summer signing was that of Dejan Lovren - who made his debut against the club he left acrimoniously, albeit for £20m.

Liverpool are still looking for a leader in defence to fill the void left by Jamie Carragher's retirement the year before last and the manager's hope is the Croatian fits the bill as it was an area of weakness which cost them valuable points in their surprise title challenge last season.

The centre-back, incessantly booed by the visiting fans, certainly added more of a presence alongside Martin Skrtel and won headers in situations which have often caused problems in the past.

It was not all plain sailing at the back in the first half with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet getting in a tangle with Graziano Pelle at Southampton's first corner and almost presenting the visitors with an easy chance.

Basingstoke Gazette:

But Liverpool's strength remains in the final third of the field and after scoring 101 goals last season, Sterling opened their account in an incisive attack which split Southampton wide open.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson won the ball in a tackle with Morgan Schneiderlin 10 yards inside his own half and produced a great through-ball for Sterling, who rushed through and shot past Fraser Forster, making his debut following a £10m move from Celtic.

Forster got closer to Sterling's snap-shot on the stroke of half-time and parried - but it was his Liverpool counterpart who produced the better saves of the first half as he clawed away a James Ward-Prowse inswinging free-kick and tipped over a Schneiderlin effort.

Basingstoke Gazette:

However, 10 minutes after the break he could do nothing with Clyne's powerful drive after the Saints full-back continued his run off the right flank to collect a Dusan Tadic backheel which beat Lovren.

Basingstoke Gazette:

Mignolet kept out Davis minutes later with a low save after the midfielder found himself unmarked free 12 yards out as Southampton stepped up the pressure, while another surging Clyne run was halted only by a desperate Glen Johnson tackle.

Basingstoke Gazette:

England striker Rickie Lambert, another Liverpool acquisition from Southampton, came off the bench and had a chance to score with his second touch before Sturridge grabbed the winner with 10 minutes remaining.

Henderson's cross was half-cleared by Victor Wanyama and Sterling nodded it back into the danger area, where his England team-mate poked home from close range.

But Liverpool were ultimately indebted to Mignolet, who in the opening game 12 months ago saved a last-minute penalty to secure victory.

This time he brilliantly tipped Schneiderlin's shot onto the bar in the 88th minute - and watched relieved as Long headed the rebound wide from six yards out.

Cracking effort and a lot of positives. The lack of time together cost us the game pure and simple with a couple of poor defensive errors. JWP will be player of the season. When Morgan gets back to his best and the new centre back is fit together with JayRod I think we will motor on. Sell Yoshida and Hoover and buy another top CB, ok 3 specialist CB's is thin but the two Jacks can do a job if lots of injuries hit.

I now cant wait till the WBA game

Following the upheaval that took place during the summer and with a 1st game at Anfield my main concern was not so much the result but the manner in which the team played. This may sound odd but I am happier that the Saints played well and lost narrowly (and by all accounts deserved at least a draw) than sneak a vey lucky winner. The former I believe is better for overall team moral and at the same time sends out a very positive message that the Saints are not there for the taking as many pundits predicted. Am looking forward with interest to[ hear the comments of the "experts" on MOD2 tonight.

Agree. All the new signings look promising. Pelle just needs games - he has the attributes. Bertrand looks class and forster's stature is impressive. An error at either end by davis was the difference in the end. Victor and spider very solid, jwp and isgrove look the part too. Tadic and Long are clever players as we knew. Good to see the snappy passing retained and as you'd expect it got better as the match went on. Will be flying in a few weeks.

One negative? Still vulnerable to basic punt over the top and pace.

I read one of the national papers on Saturday. Several "pundits" had us down as relegation fodder!! Not on that performance today; no way. Fantastic effort and MS so unlucky to be "victim" of such a fantastic save. Once it hit the bar it could have gone either side of the line. Then their defence did just enough to keep Shane from scoring. Only one sitter of a goal missed and that was Steven Davis. Play against that the rest of the season and we will be top 10 I am sure.

I agree with you and I enjoyed the game, I watch Saints games as if I'm a neutral and the first half Liverpool edge it, the second half Saints had the edge and could of won, the Saints team looked a little bit unsure of each other in the first half understandably but definitely improved in the 2nd half, it was an entertaining game with Wanyama outstanding and the team can only get better, I wasn't too disappointed because at no time did Saints look a poor second, Liverpool at times looked nervous especially when Saints were in there penalty area and there defence isn't
that strong not that I care.
Naturally I wanted the Saints to win and I think once the Players gel they will put the wind up any team and will be difficult to beat, I also thought they looked quicker than last season, I felt the result today should of been a draw and look forward to the next game which unfortunately I can't watch so will have to be content with highlights COYR

There will be a few downers along the way till next spring but all in all a positive time ahead methinks.[/p][/quote]I hope not townsend simply because they are unlikely to sell when we are denying them their no.1 target. Great weekend and had the luck been reversed saints and spurs could have swapped results. Was very interested to see spurs have yet to pick up the saints passing style - looked poor. SaintJD

well well well...what a return for 100 million! and a englishman scored the winner...can't be to bad for our national team,,,and morgan almost cleaned his slate. one game and a lot of positives. I THINK RON WILL BE QUITE PLEASED IF LIVERPOOL ARE OUR TOP DRAWER! AND IF YOU THINK OF ALL THE HYPE AND GLOBETROTTING OF UTD..AND EXPERT NEVILLE TALKING OF STATUE'S OF ROONEY!! SOUTHAMPTON FANS AROUND THE GLOBE CAN FEEL PRETTY GOOD ABOUT OUR LOT. GREAT EFFORT!
But there are no Saints fans around the globe. Southampton isn't a globally recognised team.
Whatever, even in NZ, where Rugby is our national game, we have Saints Fans. Please take you're ignorant views elsewhere.

Like others I thought we played very well, particularly in the second half, and therefore deserved a draw. However my concern is whether our forwards will score enough goals. Some on here already have Tadic down as a better player than Lallana. Personally I will withhold judgement until the end of the season. Likewise with Pelle and Long.

I did what you said, Ospers, and sent him a message I assumed your 'no abuse please' means DON'T abuse you, no? I hope I didn't misread you. :-)

No, thats why there are Saints Supporters clubs in Australia and the States. And I'm pretty sure we appear to have picked up a few Algerian fans lately to :0)

OK, I've been quiet for years, now my first post to answer the fool who says there are no Saints fans around the globe.
So sadly wrong mate! As an Aussie I've been in South East Asia for nearly 30 years and a passionate Saints fan for nearly 40 years!
In Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia to name a few, there are a growing number of football fans who don't just blindly follow like sheep and support the supposed 'big clubs'!
They see the inherent value and attraction of a solid, inspiring and family-friendly club with tradition, loyalty and passion as its core values.
And God knows, we need those qualities at times to remain obsessed about our brilliant club, and stay strong and loyal supporters, win or lose!
A tough summer this year for us, but I believe RoKo can indeed do the job, and with a little more time to gel together, bring this team to even greater heights than last year.
COYR!! STID!!
