The Daily Echo examines what is going on at St Mary's this summer

COMMENT - Clueless? Saints madness almost worthy of a board game

Basingstoke Gazette:

What is going on at St Mary’s?

It’s a mystery with so many different possibilities that it is almost worthy of its own board game.

Players have been flooding out of St Mary’s all summer, so the Echo’s team of super-sleuths have been sent in to investigate the reasons behind all these disappearing acts.

Below we delve into the background of some of the suspects in this dramatic case of the vanishing football team.

But where do YOU think the responsibility lies?

Basingstoke Gazette:

Basingstoke Gazette:

Basingstoke Gazette:

Basingstoke Gazette:

Basingstoke Gazette:

Basingstoke Gazette:

WHODUNNIT?

Who was responsible for the remarkable mass exodus of star players from St Mary’s this summer?

Was it ‘Lady’ Liebherr in the boardroom, with Saints’ statement of accounts in her hand?

Was it ‘Colonel’ Cortese in the front row of the directors’ box, with his dream of attempting to create an English Barcelona-type model now in tatters?

Was it ‘Inspector’ Pochettino in the dressing room, i nforming players he was off while last season drifted towards its end?

Was it ‘Major’ Lambert in the dressing room, his quickfire sale just a few days after the ‘Inspector’s own departure setting up Saints for a summer of total unrest?

Was it ‘Chauffeur’ Reed, for a long time sitting next to the ‘Colonel’ in the directors’ box, with his April statement that players asking to leave will be held to their contracts?

Or was it ‘Chief’ Hodgson on the plane to Brazil?

Had he never selected Lallana, Lambert and Shaw in the first place, would they all still be at St Mary’s?

Whodunnit? Was it all of the above, either acting alone or in cahoots, or none of them?

Were the lights on, or off, at the time of the ‘crime’?

In true murder mystery suspense, we do not know the answer.

We do not yet know whether the ‘victim’ has been murdered?

Some fans believe the ‘victim’ - Southampton FC – has ‘died’ this summer, after having its heart brutally ripped out by people in red on Merseyside and Manchester.

Others believe the ‘victim’ is not dead, just battered, but with an injection of new blood – signings – can recover.

Sorry Echo, I imagine you had this article in the pipeline for a few days, thus printing it today, but I think it is inappropriate today following two days that suggest we are potentially beginning to turn things around.

Tuesday morning was the time for this one I'm afraid.

OK, the jury is still out, but I'd like to focus on the idea of rebuilding now and the news of potential quality incoming players and the Bertrand deal means I think it is rather disrespectful to print this article today.

I've always said I'd judge the board on actions and, for the first time this summer, they look like they might be being decisive and getting some control on departures and arrivals.

Bertrand is a very good deal and bringing in Forster would suggest that we have the right idea in terms of what's needed replacement wise.

None of the above, the general state of football is entirely to blame.
Things could have been handled better, but at the end of the day the big clubs feed off the smaller clubs and thanks to fifa's fair play rules it will continue.

Jack Walker, Blackburn, started the rot 20 odd years ago by buying any decent player to stop rivals buying them, it's no different now, just on a bigger scale

The buy them and loan them needs system to be investigated, top teams have so many players on their books just to loan them to clubs who will not bother them.
But that is ok by FIFA's books....

Limit the amount of loans at each club and we won't get the rape and pillage that has happened at our place.

We have to look ahead and deal with whatever hand we are dealt with. A saints fan through thick and thin, for better or worse. We have had worse times and come out of them smelling of roses. The club (i.e. the fans) will do so this time. It was just yesterday, so to speak we were in league 1. Now we have a first class academy producing some fine players, first class stadium. and if no more fie sales take place a team that can keep us in the Premier League until the dust settles and the boat stops rocking until we get an owner(s) and chairman with football in their veins. Maybe I gave the game away by this last comment

DE get rid of this excuse of an article now. I fail to understand what it is meant to achieve other than being extremely upsetting to Saints fans and the SFC board and owner.....It really is extremely divisive. Why not actually look at the real cause of the problem- FFP rules, big clubs retaining their monopoly and the incompetent FA? The real "losers" from this debacle will be the England team who will struggle to find any young talent playing regular first team football in the PL.

They will next be whinging and whining that they have been banned from SMS again (which they should be).

Sadly very unprofessional and IMO the club would be entitled to a written apology.

A first class article, striking right at the heart of the mistrust and mismanagement caused entirely by one Mr Cortese.
Just ask what loyal and respected former servants of SFC think of him, including but not limited to ;- Adkins, Pardew, Le Tissier, Channon, Benali, Steele, the programmes sellers, Solent Interiors.etc.etc. -- not to mention the Southern Daily Echo, which, to my knowledge, since I delivered it, 60 years ago, has always been a staunch and loyal supporter of the Saints.
Cortese's greed and philosophy of no one else matters except me, his get rich quick, there is no such thing as loyalty, influenced many susceptible players, many of whom have sold their birthright for a mess of pottage.
I say good riddance to all of them, they could well have followed the loyalty example of the likes of Ted Bates, Terry Paine and Mike Channon but instead chose pieces of silver!
Mark my words the likes of Shaw ( overweight and unfit), Lallana ( light weight and grossly over rated ), Lambert, (good man and can't blame him at his age for taking the silver) and all the other deserters, will get their comeuppance and will be distant, rejected, overpriced hasbeens at the end of next season.
The Liebherr Family built its international, highly successful and respected, business on the basis of integrity, quality, caring and fairness --- all sadly lacking in that bad apple, Cortese, who, despite his transient success on the pitch, was recognised by the Liebherr's, for what he was and ejected him from the barrel!
Good luck to the Liebherr Family and to the New Saints may they thrive!!
