lloyd Isgrove scores as Saints beat Cherries to continue perfect pre-season run

Saints won their fourth game out of four in pre-season, with a 1-0 victory away to Bournemouth.

Lloyd Isgrove’s first-half goal was enough to separate the sides in a game that started well, but tailed off after the break.

Saints have now beaten Dutch amateurs EHC Hoensbroek, Belgian minnows Sporting Hasselt, Swindon Town and Cherries, without conceding a goal.

Ronald Koeman fielded his strongest starting line-up of the summer yet, and it was no surprise to see his team control the first half.

They deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes, when Lloyd Isgrove headed in Nathaniel Clyne’s right-wing cross.

Graziano Pelle wasted a good chance to double the lead before the break, but fired straight at Cherries keeper Benji Buchel when through on goal.

A raft of substitutions in the second half interrupted the flow of the game, although Bournemouth thought they had equalised in the dying stages, when Brettt Pitman headed in an Ian Harte free-kick, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Saints: Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida (Hooiveld 61), Targett, S Davis (Reed 61), Ward-Prowse (Stephens 76), Tadic (McQueen 61), Ramírez (Cork 45), Isgrove (Mayuka 76), Pelle (Gallagher 76).

Bournemouth: Buchel, Smith (Francis 71), Cook (Stanislas 71), Elphick, Daniels (Cargill 71), McQuoid (Arter 71), Gosling (Whitfield 81), O'Kane (Matthews 81), Pugh (Harte 71), Kermorgant (Pitman 71), Wilson (Ritchie 45).

Targett excellent, Pelle and Clyne very good. Gentle football mainly, need to bolster the first team with some powerful additions at centre half.

Ok, we are still very under strength, but this is a good result.
Bournemouth would have really wanted to win this one, no mistake, to boost their Championship credentials.

No goals conceded, in 4 games, 2 of those games against localish teams, with intentions of getting one over their Premier League neighbour, is as good as you could hope for, given our depleted squad.

Also shows Ronko which players could be called upon, to do a job, when he does buy his players in.

Good, OK, 4 in a row. Cannot complain at that.

But, feeling a little nervous still about the start of the PL. Awkward first game against a good name bolstered by 2 Saints' runaways and a Saints' legend.

Will our lads have had time to gell and gain confidence? Perhaps a few new names might encourage us all.

Wish I had a crystal ball.

I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't create more goal scoring chances or score more goals. Apart from that, the signs aren't too bad, especially in the absence of our more defensive midfielders. Pelle, Tadic and Targett all looked quite handy.

agree but just to add I think gaston had a good game, pelle and tadic did well just need those couple more games to really get going.

4 clean sheets and weve just lost half our defence.

Atmosphere not very good from our lot. Only for Kermit and when we scored the disallowed goal. Your lot made the noise.
Not as many Bmth fans there as I thought there would be, but it was only a friendly.

Haven't seen the "highlights" of this one yet.

I hope the "5min highlights" of the last 3 warm ups were to give the opposition a false sense of security cos Saint's came across as poor (even with the poor opposition)
