Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has been called into France's squad for the 2014 World Cup

Basingstoke Gazette: Morgan Schneiderlin Morgan Schneiderlin

Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has received a late call-up to France's World Cup squad.

The 24-year-old is one of two players promoted from the reserve list, after injury ruled out Franck Ribery and Clément Grenier.

Schneiderlin, who has not yet been capped at senior level by his country, is joined by Montpellier midfielder Rémy Cabella in the squad.

Ribery had been following an individual training programme to overcome a back problem and failed to prove his fitness after rejoining the full squad on Friday.

Grenier sat out the session as he underwent scans on a thigh injury, and both players' worst fears were confirmed by coach Didier Deschamps.

Congratulations to him. Fully deserved and for me, one of the best, yet underrated midfielders in Europe, today.

The downside.... How long before the vultures swoop? Which, if (when) that did happen, I'd be disappointed, but understanding. A great midfielder and if he doesn't get picked up by PSG... Bayern.... Arsenal... whoever.... a great replacement as Captain and a great ambassador for the club

I'm so pleased for Morgan. He's been absolutely brilliant for us year after year and fully deserves the recognition. Here's hoping he gets some game time and, along with Rickie (yet to wear a Liverpool shirt in anger), Adam, Luke, Dejan, Gaston and Maya, shows the world what it is to be a Saint.

Congrats to Spiderman!

For us this has a plus and a minus side. The plus is that he should be content to stay if he's managing to get international call-ups while still playing for Southampton (shock horror). The minus is that he'll probably get tapped up by his international teammates like Rickie, Adam, and Luke have been. Great.

Félicitations, Spiderman!

So proud to be a Saint and so proud to be from Alsace (that's both him and me right now).

It's been all over the local radio news this afternoon and is sure to be headline news on the local TV in a mo.

To translate the main headline a little while ago (say it as though you're in shock that your brother has just been given a knighthood):

'Morgan Schnederlin from near Obernai (in Alsace), once of Racing Club de Strasbourg, who played here as a teenager before moving to English club Southampton where he is known as Spiderman is going to with the French squad to the World Cup in Brazil.'

No one - and I just about include Rickie in this because Morgan was with us before the big slide downwards and has been content to honour his contracts thus far - deserves it more.

C'est vrai, Elsass, c'est vrai.

The local TV news on France3 started with a report from the little village of Zellwiller where Morgan was home collecting his things before flying this afternoon to Paris.

The national news has been discussing his inclusion, too, with tweets from the French public. Some have called for Nasri or Gouffran to get a call up instead. I guess they have absolutely no idea how good he is. It's probably a bit like when Hargreaves was getting into the England team and some wouldn't accept him.

Delighted for him Strassie but can't help feeling nervy that he'll play a blinder and attract the vultures. This so keenly anticipated World Cup has all turned very sour for me with Rickie leaving and the other two allegedly looking to go.

Perhaps you could explain to me how those from Alsace are extraordinarily loyal and reliable folk and treat contracts like the gospel. It may not be true of course but if you could make it up in a convincing manner I'd be much obliged.

I hope he gets some playing time, but he will already be a hero at home just for making it that far.
I have a sneaky feeling that "les bleus" might be the dark horses in this race. Over the recent WCs we've either got out miserably in the first round or went all the way to the final!
So Morgan will just have to watch the team going past the group stages and then come in to play the final once all the others are suspended :0))

It's probably a bit like when Hargreaves was getting into the England team and some wouldn't accept him.[/p][/quote]I hope he gets some playing time, but he will already be a hero at home just for making it that far. I have a sneaky feeling that "les bleus" might be the dark horses in this race. Over the recent WCs we've either got out miserably in the first round or went all the way to the final! So Morgan will just have to watch the team going past the group stages and then come in to play the final once all the others are suspended :0)) StElsass

Allez mush!
Gotfordam!!! At last, someone to challenge Sebastien Loeb, the unchallengeable!!

I was getting worried he wouldn't get a call up unless Alsace declared independence, or the germans reclaimed you all so he could have been picked by germany, what are the chances of that Stras?

youre not comparing spider with sick note Hargreaves are you stras? he wasn't a bad player but I don't think you can really compare the two.
Just comparing the situation of how some English fans regarded Hargreaves to how some French seem to regard Morgan. I have to say, I genuinely think Morgan is twice the player that Hargreaves was, but I'm probably doubly biased.

Hargreaves got booed when he came on against Trinidad in the German world cup but went out to be our player of the tournament. He was a very good player but injury wrecked him. Morgan is better.

Oh, and while there's zero chance of a German invasion, the locals are up in arms about government area reforms which would join Alsace with Lorraine.

Over on this side of the Vosges, they refer to the rest of France as 'the interior' and locals are mighty suspicious of those who live over there :-)

Come on France!
If it makes you feel better, Confucious, I've never ever in my whole life met one single Alsacian footballer who has ever played for Saints who has ever left the club whilst under contract - not one!

Therefore, Ricky, Adam, Luke, Morgan, Dejan, Maya & Gaston, have I missed anyone ? Unlucky for Nathaniel so could have been eight.

Sorry Jack, you also deserved to go with Nat, especially from what I saw in the last game.
Milner at right back ? Nat would have been better.
Stand in for Gerrard in holding midfield ? Jack would have been OK there.
