England manager Roy Hodgson has congratulated Liverpool on signing Rickie Lambert from Saints.

The striker’s transfer to Anfield is due to be completed tomorrow, although the player himself will be at a pre-World Cup training camp in Miami by that point.

Lambert passed a medical in Liverpool yesterday and has agreed a two-year contract with the club he supports.

The 32-year-old was an unused substitute for England in Friday night’s 3-0 win against Peru, at Wembley, but is set to feature in Wednesday’s friendly against Ecuador.

Hodgson, who used to manage the Reds, is expecting Lambert to be full of enthusiasm when he takes to the field at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium.

“He is very happy, I am happy for him and I congratulate Liverpool on signing a good player,” he said.

“I am sure that when he plays against Ecuador you will see a fella running around with all the joy that his heart can muster, because he is very happy to be here with England and he is very happy that the move to Liverpool has gone through.”

I agree with comments above. Plus Hodgson presumably needs to see his squad players actually playing? The move to Liverpool means Lambert will undoubtedly get less game time and that will see him lose his play in the England squad. Is that what Hodgson is "happy" about???

This just shows again that Saints are seen as a second class club.
We need to show our ambition and sign up a top manager like Rafa Benitez as it would do for Saints what Kevin Keegan signing did at that time.
That would show everyone and convince all the players to stay.

I assumed that after the WC Rickie would cease to feature anyway because of age and not likely to be around for the next tournament.

I agree the statements from Hodgson are out of order, he shouldn't get involved in club politics, he makes it sound like Rickie couldn't wait to leave Saints and no one believes that to be true.

I believe it is a good deal for Ricky and not too bad for Saints.
Ricky deserves this move to end his career, thank you Rick for helping return Saints back to the Premiership.
For Saints, whilst we are all sad to see him go, it is not a bad deal for a player of his age and it does clear the way for at least TWO top strikers to come in.
We now need to convince Adam & Luke etc to stay and help take us on to Europe as Ralph has said this week it is the intention.
To do that the new board must show the ambition and sign a proven, high profile manager that will also attract the two top strikers to come to Saints.
Rafa Benitez ticks all the boxes and says he wants to return to the Premiership. He would repay his high salary in no time and show the big clubs that we are a team to be worried about next season.
As I have said, Rafa Benitez would raise Saints profile just as the signing of Kevin Keegan did.
Come on Katharina, Ralph & Les don't go for a cheap option GET RAFA and give us all a lift.

I can hear the conversation "just have a word in Adams ear Roy, tell him it would be better for his england carrear if he was at skiverpool" etc etc there's a £100,000 in it for you! It would not be the first time that corruption rules in football, what with that and Gerard, etc poking them day in day out. How did Skiverpool get an idea Rickie wanted to go there? Quick chat with stevie, he reports back bang we get an offer. Ok I know go back to watching Lewis on the telly. Just airing a thought

Moving to Liverpool will, IMO, also harm Lallana's progress, because I think he will be rotated with the other midfielders, and not play every game.
He has always had ability, but when he loses the sharpness that comes with playing in every match, his effectiveness can drop by 15-20%.
We saw that in our first season back in the Premier League, when he struggled with injuries, and I would expect to see it again, if he moves on to a team with a bigger squad.

An English team fields a starting 11 full of England hopefuls and has some success and this is how the national set up thank us.

Football is supposed to be our national sport now our national teams future is a premiership 2nd 11

I think Hodgson should but out of the situation! Why does he need to say this when it was Saints who have developed a player he is taking to the World cup! Why not encourage players to stick by the clubs who are trying to increase the number of England players he has to choose from in the Premiership! We could always do a Newcastle and have a larger French contingent.
