'Highest quality managers' after Southampton job says chairman Ralph Krueger

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger claims they have been inundated with calls from some of the "highest quality managers in Europe" and that the club are in their best ever position despite Mauricio Pochettino's exit.

The former Argentina international's 16-month reign at St Mary's came to an end on Tuesday, when he penned a five-year deal to fill the vacancy at Tottenham.

Pochettino's departure has raised questions over the direction of the club and future of a number of Saints' players, such as England internationals Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana.

However, chairman Krueger insists players will only leave on their terms and that the club's recruitment process is already gathering pace.

"We have the highest quality managers in Europe knocking on our door," Krueger said.

"We also have the highest quality available players and their agents knocking on our door. There's a lot of exciting people that want to come here.

"Right now, the focus is on people leaving, but that's normal news broadcast. Behind the scenes there are many people interested in what we're doing here.

"I believe the fact there's so much interest in our manager and our players is also a sign that we're doing the right things here in Southampton.

"Les Reed [Saints' football director] is inundated right now with managers who are interested in taking this club forward and I believe we're in the strongest position that this club has ever been in."

Saints have 20 people working full-time on scouting and recruitment, all of whom are targeted on bringing the best staff and players to the club.

"This same group was involved with finding Mauricio Pochettino, and they were involved out there searching and recruiting profiles which they continue to do because that's their job," Krueger said.

"A club does not invest in 20 recruitment people if it doesn't want to improve or have ambitions to play European football, so we have all of these people employed which is a clear example of what we're trying to do."

Krueger highlighted the importance of Saints moving "swiftly" in appointing a new manager but promised not to rush the situation.

Murat Yakin and Ronald Koeman are the current bookmakers' favourites to take the St Mary's hotseat, while former Swansea manager Michael Laudrup is said to be in the running.

Sunderland will resist any moves for Gus Poyet, while a number of other candidates have been given short prices by the bookies.

So far no outstanding candidates have come to the fore in terms of succeeding Pochettino, but fans' favourite Matthew Le Tissier laughed off suggestions the club will go into meltdown.

"This football club has sold a lot of good talent and people have written us off before.

"We keep producing players and if you lose a couple, we've got players that can come through and take their places.

"If we do lose a couple, we'll have a lot of money there to go out and spend, so I think, for me, if you appoint a decent manager who is going to use the money wisely, then I don't see any reason why we can't have a similar season to last season.

"We've been doing it for years, back to Alan Shearer's time. I remember people back then saying, 'You've sold Shearer, you're going to get relegated'. I don't go with the whole meltdown, panic thing."

I cannot believe that a target wasn't identified when Pochettino was given permission to talk to spurs.
Yakin, bookies and fans fav to take the job has not even been contacted according to his agent.
Ralph, this is the way it works in the premier league, your team identifies it's targets and gets after them, you do not sit in your office sifting through a pile of application forms from desperados.
Get out there and convince the best manager available that there is a wonderful job available, and when can you start.

To be honest I think the mistake was that we don't have any managers coming through the Academy to the standard required to take on the first team coach and this is why Dodd and Williams were let go. We need to get in someone like Eddie Howe to work with someone like Frank de Boer so that he is a ready made replacement. There is no point in bringing in a manager who will have success for 1 season and then leave to bigger and better things. Saints need to have the continuity already in place so the players see that stability.

Hope that was tongue in cheek. Not sure how long you have been a Saints fan but it is never a dull day. What we will have is a united team. Not Cortese's team or Man.

Poch couldn't give a toss about the club. He wanted more money and went. He is better off gone. Onwards and upwards.

that must be why they've come out and said that there is zero intention of selling the club and appointed Krueger then. You don't appoint a permanent chairman if you are going to sell the club. Surely you knew that?

Thats one tool in we now have in the locker and I think another manager will add yet another dimension to our game and take us one stage higher, so I am really optimistic.

Quite happy with that statement, from Ralph.

Will certainly upset those that have been attacking them for the past 2 weeks, because it is full,of positivity and because he wants the new manager to have a say in "which players come and which players go".

Bit different to what the bed wetters have been saying about players already having been sold, despite the media constantly changing their stories from going, to done deal then back to stalled, all within a few days.

Note to Ralph - don't sell anyone now!!!

Feeling a little more positive today as it finally appears Krueger has realised he needs to present a public front. Even more important was he explained why he was silent which I respect. My only concern is it still sounds like we have to accept an outgoing transfer will happen as he said "we won't have a summer without a transaction" (Source BBC website) I don't think any fan would worry about in coming transfers needing to be justified. Overall though a good statement and lets ensure the right man is appointed.

We can all speculate and wish. The bottom line is, we still have a very exiting young squad which needs a forward thinking manager the players can respect. This board will stand or fall by this decision. I am not sure who I do want but I am **** sure whom I don't want. As for MP...he was ruthless in taking over Nigel Atkin's job yet he now works for a man who's middle name is ruthless. Also, at Saints he worked with young and pliable English players. At Spurs, he'll come up against one or two unbearable egos. We'll see what the next couple of days brings us.....

I feel really positive after watching RK on sky. First time I have heard the guy on tv and had no idea Saints backroom staff "found" Poch. I thought it was NC personally as he always took the credit. I am starting to get excited about a new manager. Remember he who laughs last, laughs longest. Spurs has done us a favour. Mark my words Spuds will not finish in the top four and Poch will be off when a bigger club comes calling. Oh how we will laugh when that day comes and Saints nick a CL spot at the expense of Spuds.

Krueger is at least out there and on TV making statements, which at least sound convincing so I feel a little bit soothed by that. I wonder if NC would be doing the same if still here, I doubt it, but let's hope Krueger walks the talk.
Can't wait to see who is finally appointed, though it does make me think that some of those 'high calibre' applicants we have been 'in-undated' with may be going to use us like Poch has to get on the next rung of his career ladder, which is how it feels.
However, if we can get in top managers by offering them a fantastic club with all we have to offer, that is a stepping stone to the PL and onwards to a so called 'top club' then we will be the benefactors too, so it's a win win situation. After-all, having lots of top managers for short periods of time has worked OK for Chelsea...

With the car crash that is going on around the club, let’s just reflect on the abilities of MoPo as a manager.
Up side - Yes he got the team playing good attacking football but pretty sure they were heading that way anyway. It was a very good squad he inherited.
Down side – One dimensional, spent a lot, naïve to supporters (FA Cup) used us as a stepping stone, bailed out went he thought he could take the team no further.
I understand ambition. But like a few managers around (and I mean this) – the true abilities of a manger show through when the going gets tough. How good would Jose, Pep and even Saggy Chops be without the cash to splash?
In short, managers are like grand prix racing drivers – give them the best resources and you get the results just look at Lewis this year.
Goodbye MoPo. You had the chance to become a hero at Southampton FC but you have turn coat and left. You deserve the Spuds and they deserve you. Justice will be served when David Moyes (my choice) lifts us into the top six as Spuds expense.
A new chapter opens in the history of Southampton FC. We supports will remain as loyal and dedicated as the next man. Unlike some. COYR.
Ralph, this is the way it works in the premier league, your team identifies it's targets and gets after them, you do not sit in your office sifting through a pile of application forms from desperados.
Get out there and convince the best manager available that there is a wonderful job available, and when can you start.

Dead right. I record to my own DVD the MoD highlights of the Saints's games and note the possession % the Saints achieve in every game.

Just amazing how we lost or just drew games where often we had nearly 70% possession! but could not turn this into goals. I guess this dominance should have got us probably another 12 points. For example, 68% possession against Cardiff at home and LOST 1-0. You will know of others like this.

Needs attention from the new manager.

ah poor little fishy, still trying to compare our properly run and funded club to your shower.
the one thing you seem to forget when you keep repeating this same old tired nonsense is that our owner is a multi-billionaire, who actually wants to be at the club, has real money and people have even seen he and know she exists! she not a dodgy money lender, gun runner or dodgy bank owner (allegedly) who are just after what the can get.
we are still in the prem after finishing 8th last season, and that's despite losing our chairman and £15mill worth of striker mid-season and English striker to a career threatening injury, and after each of those (and before) you have been on here telling us all that our cub was going into meltdown and the owner has put the club up for sale but will asset strip before she does, well hows those predictions been going for you?
concentrate on having another relegation season with poopey whilst watching the `presidents` take more and more control, ownership and power away from the truss!

Right, that's dealt with the rubbish, now what is Ralph saying? What is he on about? (I believe this is verbatim): "We have the highest quality managers in Europe knocking on our door."

Hm.

Do we really?

Nice to hear from you at last Ralph but when I think top quality I am thinking Guardiola, Benitez, Conte, Trapattoni, and Simeone (although I am a bit lukewarm on Argentinians at the moment).

Are you telling me these guys, or men like Klopp, AVB, or Bielsa are all banging on the door?

I suppose we will find out in time, but I suspect Kreuger's idea of top quality is different to mine, but maybe I am doing him an injustice and we really HAVE got one of these fellas interested.

You're right it could be worse: Harry might come back! Steve McLaren I've heard is a real possibility.

Yakin, koeman, laudrup, Benitez, Mancini sounds really exciting lets hope it's not Lennon, maclaren or McKay ! Krueger sounded really positive on sky but he is still a football novice lets hope he and the club make the right decision after the mopo mess
Two self-serving overpaid and greedy people have left Saints payroll, perhaps we can start to spend it more wisely to complement that faultless organic growth from within then?
Onwards and upwards, Saints Forever.

Good to hear from you at last Ralph.
The new manager needs appointed quickly and be:-
1. A High Profile, Proven and Experienced manager
2. A good Man-manager
3. Play attractive passing football
4. Capable of developing young players
5. Able to attract top quality players
6. Appoint a top class team of coaches
7. Ideally have European experience
Do not sell anyone until the new manager has spoken to them, and keep all those he wants and especially keep Adam as he is the centre of the team unity.
I just love the way that every fan on here is an expert in running a football club.

Coming from an ice hockey background, I'm sure that RK is mighterly (spelling?) relieved to have so many knowledgeable advisers to help him. I mean, it's not like he's been involved with any big sporting organisations and businesses in the past, is it??

I wonder how many of us fans walk into our bosses office on the top floor and tell them who best to recruit and how to run their business !! :-)
