Tim Sherwood sacked by Tottenham Hotspur, with Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino the favourite to replace him

Basingstoke Gazette: Sherwood leaves Spurs Sherwood leaves Spurs

Tim Sherwood has been dismissed by Tottenham Hotspur today, with Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino the frontrunner alongside Ajax's Frank de Boer for the job.

Spurs confirmed the expected departure of Sherwood, who had been handed an 18-month contract last December, in a statement this lunchtime.

Pochettino and De Boer are the two favourites to replace the 45-year-old at White Hart Lane, although Saints are understood to have tabled a contract offer to their manager in a bid to keep him at St Mary's.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: “We appointed Tim mid-season as someone who knew both the players and the Club.

“We agreed an 18-month contract with a break clause at the end of the season and we have now exercised that option.

“Since appointing Tim as Assistant First Team Coach in 2008 and then as Technical Co-ordinator in 2010 and Head of Football Development in 2012, we have been supportive of him during football management changes throughout that period.

"On behalf of the Club, I should like to state our thanks for all his efforts during his years with us. We wish him great success in his managerial career.

“Moving forward, now the season is over, we shall embark on the process of finding a new Head Coach.

"We have a talented squad and exciting young players coming through. We need to build on this season, develop our potential and inspire the kind of performances that we associate with our great Club."

You've got to love Spurs: 18-month contract, the guy has a win percentage as good as any Spurs manager and they end it early. Brilliant.

This is also the club that sacked the manager who took them to Champions League football. Good luck to whoever comes in and falls for Levy's 'building for the future' BS.

If MoPo is foolish enough to accept the poison chalice that is Tottenham Hotspur FC then I would be very reluctant to wish him the best. If he is keen then I trust Saints will insist on him fulfilling his contract or resigning or push Levy for very acceptable compensation to send out the message that a perceived "smaller" club will not simply bend to the needs of a "bigger" club.

MoPo needs to think very carefully before even contemplating moving to 'Spurs', should he be offered the job in the first place. He may be given more money but what have they achieved in recent years diddly squat. Furthermore who in their right mind would want to work for someone like Levy. The way he treats managers it is clear he has no respect for them. Sherwood came across as a decent hard working man who achieved good results whilst he was in charge. If us mere mortals were treated in the same way by our employers we would sue them for unfair dismissal.
All Levy and his ilk are interested in is money and power.
MoPo has the full backing of the fans and he can achieve great things with this club provided he gets the backing of the board.
Why can't we be more successful than these wannabe clubs like Spurs and Everton. Stability is the key. Come on Katherina and co it's over to you.

Let's not forget it isn't just Mo Po making a decision here - chances are Spurs will opt for Frank de Boer - he's more their bag I think, especially after their 'nurturing young manager' project with AVB failed spectacularly.

I'd say he'll also display the single minded arrogance needed to boss a dressing room of egos. So don't assume the Spurs job is an option.

I'd be more worried about vacancies in Spain, but it would be awesome if Spurs install de Boer quickly and I kind of think they might already have their next manager in place already in all but signature.

It's like watching a game of chess unfolding. One move leads to another but we're nowhere close to the endgame. We'd all like everything done and dusted before the world cup, but more likely everything will rumble on until the end of August. It's going to be hard, but lots of patience needed or the summer will be more stressful for fans than the end of season relegation battles of old.

True enough. Out of interest, doesn't it make the success of Nicola's gamble on MP seem even more remarkable/fortunate
, when you see other club's such as Fulham and West Brom try and fail to follow that trick? Was listening to a West Brom player bemoaning the communication problems they were having in training under Mel. Credit for our success has to go to our players though because, with a different attitude, they could have easily made MP fail. They really have been free of egos and attitudes since the very beginning and respectful of everyone they've worked for, eager to learn. I dearly hope nobody will resort to slagging or booing any of these lads should they ever decide to move elsewhere.

It's like a chess game, but only if that chess game is a fictional chess game made up by the media.

Reminds me of transfer deadline day watching Sky Sports - a lot of excited tones and exclamations of how amazing it all is to the extent that nobody really notices that the only deal actually completed is typically a loan deal for someone like Leon Best.

Basically, if you are a 24hr sports channel or a 24hr web news service you need stories 24/7 to survive. Problem is that, in life, most of the time, not much happens and, if it does, it takes time - time to discuss things, time to read the paperwork, sit down and talk it over with your family, maybe even take a few days off.

As far as I can see it, the MP saga has already been a rollercoaster ride that's rumbled on for months. And what have we got? About 20 pre-match press conferences, 100 repeats of the same question, 100 repeats of the same answer - nothing has happened.

And to be fair to them, despite the thousands of column inches, I don't think the press have ever really said anything has actually happened regarding MP (bar the Echo's embarrassing meeting that never happened). Spurs are interested, that's about it.

Oh so there has never been a manager under contract who has left a club that didn't want him to go? Check your facts, it's a common occurrence. If you were Les and you told Poch that you had received an approach from Spurs to speak to him, but that he wasn't going anywhere as he is under contract, Poch would just laugh.

Poch needs proof that our ambition is not just rhetoric. If we fend off Man United and keep Luke it will be a major piece of proof.

Well here we go this will test the new board and show the real intent and what the future will be. Are we ambitious and looking to move forward or are we still a selling club.
I thought that selling young talents like Walcott / Bale / OxlaideCamberlain were behind us especially as we got too little for them.
If MoPo is allowed to go to Spurs and according to the media take Lovren & J-Rod with him and with Adam to Liverpool, Luke to Man U and Morgan to Arsenal, we could not afford to replace them all even if we got high fees for them because that amount of quality is not on the market.
Far better Les & Ralph to tell all they are not being sold and go and buy our targeted players quickly before we loose out.
All the above are under contract thanks to Nichola so we shouldn't be selling any of them. Please tell them so and stop their heads being turned DO NOT break up all that has been done over the last 5 years.

MP has said that he has to honour his contract! Does that sound like the words of a man who will leave just because another club shows interest?
The club have said they want MP to stay and are working on a new deal and plan for the future, does that sound like the club are willing to let MP talk to any club that shows interest?
Just like everyone else I have no idea of what MP and the club are talking about or if MP will sign a new contract, however I'm not taking every piece of journalistic nonsense, guess work and blindly joining dots as evidence of whats happening. Until the club announce a statement that differs from their previous statements then I have no reason to assume otherwise! I'm a Bournemouth fan living in Southampton. Saints who even vaguely know me are often asking or are interested in how AFCB are getting on, particularly since we got some backing behind us and Howe has us shooting up the leagues.

We'd love to get one over on Saints, of course. And it's fair to say we find Saints irritating at times. I wouldn't say that means we hate you though, at all.

I doubt Howe would be on Saints' radar if Poch did leave you, and I doubt he'd even want to leave for anywhere just yet - until we all know how far we can go. The 5M or so for Lallana will help in that regard :)

Once in a few years Howe has taken us as far as is possible, then he'll go IMHO.

It looks like Saints could be in line for a massive windfall this summer with Shaw, Lallana, Lovren etc. I'd just urge Saints to make sure that all this money is retained within SFC coffers, and doesn't disappear out the door somehow, you see it happens so often at smaller clubs where the ownership is possibly in question. It should be used for the long term health and rebuilding of the club.

Interesting approach, you know there were a lot of us hoping you would have at least got into the play offs! One or two of your "fans" have a habit of annoying us, but we don't yet regard you as serious rivals. As far as the money that we are supposed to be getting, it isn't the fans that will have any influence on that, but we would rather current keep the team intact than make a mint! It would only take a couple of good signings to complete the jigsaw, should the desire be there. We can only be patient and wait for developments, and as always we will be the last to know.

The problem with MoPo is he doesn't have a plan B.
He wanted and got Dani Osvaldo.........utte
r waste of money at £15million.
He then fell out with saints second record signing Gasto Ramirez £12Million who didn't play or was on the bench for most of the season.
You can't really judge a manager after 1 full season but MP will never get another set of talented youngsters ( all were at saints before he arrived) handed to him like that again. Who's to say that if another manager was in his shoes and inherited that same saints team they would have done even better than MoPo. I think all the signs are that MP will go to Spurs..........but the man for Saints is Rafa Binitez.

Is it just me or is the Bournemouth vs Saints rivalry the most one sided grudge in football history? I don't think I've ever met a Saints fan who really spares more than a passing thought for the Cherries, bar a bit of affection borne of the fact you're a nice club with a share of financial problems. Good luck next season under EH and thanks for the nice thought (whether it was intended as such or not).
Tell that to Milton Archer, who loves to make 'encouraging' comments on our local Echo articles about the Cherries. Not so one sided as you think...by the way, I'm on here for my brother who's not able to go online at the moment, for any news on your manager. Sadly, he supports you lot! I just tell him to keep taking the tablets :-)

I'm probably quite a typical Saints fan in wanting the Cherries to do well. Of course, if for some reason you had to lose, say, 10-0 in order for Saints to somehow succeed, I'd be hoping it happened. Otherwise, all the best for next season to the Cherries. (It is still a very silly name, though!)

Exactly. The only time I would be interested in reading about Sherman is if he applies for the Saints job if Poochy decides his future is best served elsewhere. Surely it does not lie with the Spuds. Well it won't for long will it?

fine have an interest just go and have an interest somewhere else because we have had enough of people taking an interest.
it will make a change for your club to have an interest in lalla! he hasn't been with you for nearly 15 years. how much input do you think your small club had in making him the player he is? 25% of any fee? not really but then a deals a deal, even though you've already been paid more than enough for a 12yr old.
