4:13pm

CHANCE (55 mins): A great chance goes begging for Saints. Steven Davis threads a pass through for Luke Shaw, who bursts clear down the left. He centres the ball for Adam Lallana, who gets his feet in a bit of a muddle and can't convert. Shaw's pass was slightly behind the Saints skipper, but it was still an excellent opportunity. [0-0]

4:08pm

CHANCE (49 mins): Karim El Ahmadi works some space on the edge of the area, but hits a weak shot that is comfortably saved by Artur Boruc. [0-0]

3:46pm

CHANCE (45 mins): Villa nearly take a fortunate lead in the final minute of the half. Ryan Bertrand fizzes in a cross from the left, which Artur Boruc dives to try and intercept. He ends up palming the ball against Dejan Lovren, with it deflecting just wide of the post. [0-0]

3:32pm

CHANCE (32 mins): After a long spell without any incident, Saints go close to taking the lead. James Ward-Prowse whips in a ball from the left that hits Rickie Lambert and drops to Steven Davis. His snapshot is flying towards the bottom corner, but Brad Guzan dives to his right to make a stunning stop. [0-0]

3:14pm

CHANCE (12 mins): Jose Fonte makes an excellent sliding tackle to deny Gabby Agbonlahor. Marc Albrighton's through pass had sent the forward sprinting clear, but he took a heavy touch, allowing Fonte to get back and make a last-ditch intervention. [0-0]

3:08pm

CHANCE (6 mins): Rickie Lambert goes close again. Morgan Schneiderlin picks out Steven Davis' smart run down the inside-left channel with a ball over the top. Davis cuts it back to Lamber in a great position, but his left-footed effort deflects off the diving Nathan Baker and goes wide of the far post for a corner. [0-0]

3:06pm

Aston Villa coach Shay Given with some of the team before the match.

Basingstoke Gazette:

It's been a great week for two of Saints' first-team stars this week, with Adam Lallana (below) among the nominees for the PFA Player of the Year award. His teammate, Luke Shaw, is up for the Young Player of the Year gong. You can read our story here.

Basingstoke Gazette: Rickie Lambert converted from the spot in the 90th minute against West Brom

Rickie Lambert leads the line for Saints this afternoon, as he begins a big four-game spell that he believes could have a major bearing on his World Cup hopes. The striker is in contention for a ticket to Brazil, with West Ham's Andy Carroll his main rival, and he thinks the events of the next few weeks might still impact Roy Hodgson's final decision. Click here to read the full story.

I think they [the final four games of the season] will matter. I think he’s obviously watching everyone, so it’s going to be hard decisions and that’s good. Obviously, he wants hard decisions, and he’s going to have a few. I understand I might be one of those situations, so I’ve just got to try and do well now, and score some goals in the remaining four games.

Come on Rickie, missed a couple last week need to score today.

Please Ralph make a categorical statement that none of Saints stars are for sale and end all the speculation now.
Also set up early buys to improve the first team before the World Cup starts as it will be hectic afterwards. Strikers - try for Benteke or Bony & a punt on Danny Ings; Centreback - Steven Caulker only 22 but looked good last week; Goalkeeper - Marshall or Ruddy; plus a pacy winger who can cross well.
That would settle everyone down and show intent for next season..

I know some fans get hung up on our possession ratio and the fact that we don’t always get our return on goals scored. I can’t argue with that, but what I can tell you is that we play a beautiful brand of football that is enjoyed by me and football fans and purists from all corners. If you don’t enjoy it and believe that this wonderful work in progress can’t get any better than you are short sighted and have a selective memory of the past.

Had a dreadful stream, but what was clear was some of the quick, one touch passing, to get behind them, with the runners timing their runs, mostly to perfection. First class football.
Get the final ball right (although we put plenty in the right place today), and be more clinical when the chances do arrive, and we will win more than we lose, next season.

I can recall 4 hand balls now, where we've not been given a penalty, today, Cardiff last week and Norwich and Everton away. Maybe there has been a rule change and it doesn't count as foul play?

No thumbs from me. it was a valid argument, it is just a bit annoying to us happy clappers who can see why it isn't good enough! We can't score for Toffees, hope next week we can score against the Toffees.

The season is played over 38 games and where you finish at the end of that reflects how well you have done over the year. Our progress can indeed be compared season after season and as I implied we will finish higher this year as we have done consecutively for each of the last 5.
If you can’t see that than I would reiterate that you are short sighted. Give it another shot if you wish, before I decide whether or not I’m bored of you and your disrespect for our plight.

If, if,if. And if my auntie had had b*llocks she'd have been my uncle. We did get the start, so why be miserable about what MIGHT have happened if we hadn't?

We're missing J-Rod. If he's been on the pitch (see, "if") we'd probably have seen different game. Bit of strengthening this summer and we'll be 6th or 7th next. And I predict people will still be complaining.

We had a six shots to Villa's three. Seems we had more ideas about what to do with the ball than Villa. (Mind you, six is a bit below our normal standard.)

My dear Young Thing,

here's an updated version of a post I made when you came on and made your silly comment about our being "sussed". You didn't answer it, so I thought I'd give you another chance:
----
We dropped to 8th after the Villa game on 4th December(the one where we suddenly became cannon-fodder as everyone "sussed" us). Since then, after each game, our league positions have been:

88899999999889989888
8

Dramatic decline in form, don't you think?
----

The FACTS simply don't support, you, do they?

I take it you are happy for us to play crap and not score any goals against lower opposition but as long as we finish 8th that's acceptable!

My original point (not good enough) for the recent results I stand by. We have tailed off big time and it may be acceptable to the majority of you ( as long as we finish 8th) but it's not to me.

Prat expects us to make champions league footy after 2 seasons in the prem. Wake up!!!
I have just re read my posts and nope! I didn't mention Champions League once. Thought so. Who''s the prat?

Please feel free to comment on what HAS been said not what you want it to say to fit in with your pre planned witty reply.

Dramatic decline in form, don't you think?
----

The FACTS simply don't support, you, do they?
I wouldn't hold your breathe for his answer. I think he's "one comment" wonder who then goes off and hears howling. (Sort of like a Yellowstone Quasimodo.)
I was called a fish last week: wise fish don't rise to bait. (But they score more goals -:)

It's obvious it is the fault of the teams below us that are not performing, it is not that we are actually any better than them. Let's be realistic we aren't very good, just had loads and loads of luck and dozens of favourable Official decisions in our favour, what else could it possibly be?

My dear Young Thing,

here's an updated version of a post I made when you came on and made your silly comment about our being "sussed". You didn't answer it, so I thought I'd give you another chance:
----
We dropped to 8th after the Villa game on 4th December(the one where we suddenly became cannon-fodder as everyone "sussed" us). Since then, after each game, our league positions have been:

88899999999889989888

8

Dramatic decline in form, don't you think?
----

The FACTS simply don't support, you, do they?
I wouldn't hold your breathe for his answer. I think he's "one comment" wonder who then goes off and hears howling. (Sort of like a Yellowstone Quasimodo.)
I was called a fish last week: wise fish don't rise to bait. (But they score more goals -:)
Still not answered the question: If we've been "sussed" how come we've not dropped even one position down the league since you claimed it happened?
Your good start put you where you are, but you are now averaging a goal a game. Luckily there's not long to go; but do that next season and Eastleigh await you.
Worng again. I've based that on the date you claimed we were "sussed". Still unable to answer the question, so you're clearly not even slightly interested in the truth, just in silly insults not based in reality. Keep repeating it as much as you can - it might make it come true.
Time for a shush campaign against this troll I am thinking.
I hasten to add I don't mean your goodself Velly.. don't get me worng!

Ah, but we weren't. We got a point away from home.
Wow! What an ambition. Somebody pointed out last week that Mr Hodgeson is a regular spectator. The Brazilians must be quaking in their boots at all that goal-scoring threat.
Who exactly is Mr Hodgeson?
The police are back
I must caution you that anything that you say, will be recalled and used in evidence against you if you are wrong at any point. You of course are not obliged to say anything.
