Chambers: I owe everything to Poch

Basingstoke Gazette: Calum Chambers Calum Chambers

Teenage Saints full-back Calum Chambers says he owes manager Mauricio Pochettino “everything” for giving him his chance in the first-team.

The 19-year-old made his Premier League debut on the opening day of the season, and has gone on to start 16 games in the competition this term.

Chambers has hailed the faith shown in him by Pochettino, who has been keen to promote many of the club’s most talented youngsters since arriving at St Mary’s.

Asked how much he owed his manager for giving him an opportunity, Chambers said: “Everything. He gave me my chance and I can’t thank him enough for that.

“He has given a lot of youngsters the opportunity and he is a fantastic manager for us.”

Chambers has shared right-back duties this season with Nathaniel Clyne, below right, who celebrates his 23rd birthday today.

While both players are battling for the same position, the more junior defender believes that rivalry has spurred both of them on.

“I think it is a really healthy competition between us two,” said Chambers.

“We push each other on and it is only going to make us better players. It is a good competition to have.”

The rapid progression of Chambers has been all the more impressive when you consider he used to play mainly as a central midfielder and only switched to right-back less than two years ago.

Yet, having been taken on the club’s pre-season tour last summer, his plan was always to try and become an established first-team member this term.

“That was my aim at the start of the season – to break into the first-team and play as many games as I can,” he said.

“I am really pleased with how the season is going for me and I have just got to keep going, keep my head down and keep working hard.

“Playing in a team like this, it can’t get much more enjoyable.”

Chambers started last Saturday’s 4-0 win against Newcastle, and will likely be handed the same role at Manchester City today.

He believes that Saints can emerge from the Etihad Stadium with something if they can replicate the sort of performance they produced against the Magpies.

“I think it was a fantastic performance from the team,” he said.

“We are really pleased with it and now we’re focusing on the next game, where hopefully we can do the same.

“We played the way we like to play and we stuck to our game plan. It came off.”

I think Calum is a going to be a really great footballer in the future for Saints if Pochettino stays
His "reading of the game" and "weight of passes" are already top class which suggests to me that he will end up playing in another position in the team and not fullback..
I always thought he would be a great anchor man in midfield where Jack/Victor play however I believe he has been used as a centre half for the U21.
I am sure that if he stays and ignores the joke London press that Pochettino will turn him into England player within a couple of years.

Callum was whispered about as another great Saints product in the making.. I think Pards made mention of him not long after starting.. Challenging our lads to work hard and earn their chance has been the difference.. We all owe Poch as taking the leap of faith to introduce another kid cost we fans nothing.. it's the manager's neck and rep on the line and the player's future... Poch does it well and does credit to the development staff and squad and system.. Long may they keep turning them out into OUR team.. COYR the future is haloed!!

We were all very happy with Nat Clyne last season. There was no natural replacement for him and JC or Maya were used as makeshift RB. Who would have thought that another academy star would come in and step up to the plate straight away. I'd say he has made less mistakes than Luke did when he first played and doesn't look out of place at all. Great player with a good future in the game.

cant be happier with the way chambers has played this season. I was worried when I saw that clyne was injured for the first game, but I can honestly say that I don't think I can split cylne and chambers and am equally happy to see either of their names on the team sheet.
just like JWP yesterday chambers has praised MP very highly to the media, there is an obvious respect for the manager even though he apparently works them like dogs in training.

Play him in midfield and clyne at right back....who would we drop ...well whoever wasnt hitting form.Chambers attacking play last week was outstanding and ive allways been in favor of clyne but hard to leave him out now. Lets hope Rickie bags a goal today to keep that carthorse carrol out of the picture. Big ask to win or even draw today City have so much at stake, things would have to be perfect the ref has to be fair and we need the lions share of the luck but it can be done...Would be great to win that would really put saints on the map.

I don't rate him personally. A few times it loked as if he couldn't be ars*d t get back today, some poor passing. Don't go a bundle on JWP either.
