Sunderland fielded ineligible player in this season's 1-1 draw at Saints - but don't expect to be further punished

Basingstoke Gazette: Ji Dong-won Ji Dong-won

Sunderland are confident they will not face further punishment for allegedly fielding striker Ji Dong-won in four games for which he was ineligible - including last August's 1-1 draw at Saints.

Sources on Wearside have revealed the club considers the matter closed after a report on Tuesday evening claimed they had been fined in December after they made the Barclays Premier League aware that they did not have international clearance for the player.

The Black Cats are confident they fulfilled their responsibilities when the administrative error came to light, and insist there is no ongoing investigation amid speculation that the relegation-threatened club could yet be docked points.

Club secretary Liz Coley - who used to work for Saints - left her job in December to take up a new position, not as a result of the problem with Ji's clearance.

The 22-year-old South Korea international, who was registered with the Premier League and was included in the 25-man squad they released in August, made four appearances in the competition, as a substitute against Fulham, Saints and Manchester United and from the start at Crystal Palace before the mistake was discovered.

Only one of those games, a 1-1 draw at Southampton on August 24, saw then manager Paolo Di Canio's side rewarded with a point.

However, Ji also played in the Capital One Cup second round clash with MK Dons, which Sunderland won 4-2 on their way to the final.

Neither the club nor the Premier League was available for comment.

The confusion appears to surround the frontman's return to Wearside after a successful loan spell with German Bundesliga club Augsburg last season.

His spell back in English football, however, proved brief and he returned to Augsburg, this time on a permanent deal, in January this year having made just two more senior appearances under current boss Gus Poyet.

Ji initially joined the Black Cats from Chunnam Dragons for £2million in June 2011 during Steve Bruce's spell in charge, but started only six senior games for the club, although he did score a memorable winner against Manchester City on New Year's Day 2012.

But while it never quite happened for him on a sustained basis in England, he found German football much more to his liking to the extent that Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund were heavily linked with him last summer.

However, Di Canio is understood to have turned down a bid of around £5million from a German club, only to discover that he could not find a place in his team for Ji, who ultimately survived at the club longer than the Italian.

Sunderland currently lie in 19th place in the table, four points adrift of safety with just eight games to play, following Monday night's 2-1 home defeat by West Ham.

I think the FA need to deduct them the point that they won against saints just in case they stay up by 1 point. You could end up with another Tevez situation.

Otherwise it seems like a genuine error. The Lad would have got international clearence if they had applied. I am not grumbling as a saints fan

It would certainly give other teams an opening to complain, especially if the difference between staying up or going down is 1 point.
Didn't the Hoofers make an out of court settlement to Sheffield United, over the Tevez affair, to make it go away?

With such massive sums of money at stake, it would be a no brainer to try and get the point deducted.
I'm not sure Sunderland would be able to raise sufficient funds to make this go away, a la West Ham.

I think your right,
I don't want the extra 2pts from the game, he would have been cleared so it didn't affect the outcome.
however if, as you say, blunderland stay up by 1pt then whichever team is relegated will have a good argument that the FA or prem league haven't acted to implement their rules properly.
hereford utd, torquay utd and Hartlepool utd have all been deducted points won from games for playing ineligible players in the past few years. torquay lost the game but got a 1pt deduction.
hoof however got away with all sorts over tevez, so it seems that the FA/prem don't think its as bad an offence as the football league do.
the FA/prem should deduct the 1pt from blunderland or they are leaving themselves open to legal challenges from other clubs that could drag on for months.
it wont affect us, but another case might do in the future.

What happens at the end of the season if Saints are within 2 points of "Mid-table United" for 7th place.
Remember there is something like £2.5m difference in prize money for each position this season. Can we take legal action against the FA/PL for applying different rules to most other leagues ?
