Gastón Ramírez starting to show what he can do, says Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino

Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino believes that Gastón Ramírez is now beginning to showcase his true ability.

The Uruguayan playmaker, once the club’s record signing, has endured a somewhat disappointing time at the club since his £12m arrival from Bologna in 2012.

Yet, in the last couple of months, Ramírez has begun to display, on a more consistent basis, the sort of form that prompted Saints to sign him in the first place.

Against Norwich, before being forced off by a leg cramp in the second-half, the 23-year-old was a menacing presence.

Starting his first league game since New Year’s Day, he produced a stunning ball for the team’s first goal, and his vision and range of passing was sublime.

“We’re very happy for him,” said Pochettino. “We’re always especially happy with players that don’t get as much playing time as others.

“He had a cramp in one of his legs, so he had to come off. But, overall, we’re very happy with his contribution.”

Ramírez had begun to show signs of better form before suffering a cruel injury blow in January’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland.

Despite being sidelined for five weeks with ankle ligament damage, his period of absence does not appear to have knocked him back, although Pochettino did say that he is still not quite in peak condition.

“He was quite unlucky with the injury he picked up in Sunderland,” said the Saints manager.

“He’s still been recovering from that, he’s still been getting into playing time, and I think just now he’s showing what he can do.”

Pochettino would not be drawn into a conversation about how much of a threat Ramírez could be to England at the World Cup this summer, with Uruguay drawn in the same group as Roy Hodgson’s team.

But his ability will surely not have gone unnoticed by the England manager, who was watching from the stands on Saturday.

What Pochettino, pictured below, did say, however, is that he wants to see Ramírez now perform at a consistently high level, and not just in flashes, although the Argentine did warn that the talented youngster must still be given time and scope to adapt to the Premier League.

“We hope that he can show that consistency,” said Pochettino. “I think we have to take into account that he’s a very young player still, that he just arrived last season, that he still needs to adapt to the English league.

“It’s a different kind of league for him, and we more than hope that he’s able to have a lot more consistency.”

He has played a little better but still think he is a someway off what we paid for him.
We have a great opportunity to play him in more games now and hopefully he will get as good as our English (also French/English and Irish) attacking forces.

His vision is spot on, I think he has to get used to not having much time on the ball in this league, remembering he is only 23, he is definitely one to keep.

What has this to do with your Brighton? Why are you bothered about our team? Have you got another visit to your doc soon about your split personality? Supporting Palace when we played them? Remember the "fly Eagles" quote? That's like me supporting Poopey when they play Chelsea!
Make your mind up!

Gaston is playing for his world cup place and this is beneficial to us.
1. Because he has definately upped his game.
2. If he decides to leave us, we'll get a few million more if he continues to perform.

Win win !!

Osvaldo put the ball in the net twice yesterday but both "goals" were disallowed for offside, although second appeared to be an incorrect decision, Juventus won 1 0 at Genoa and the goal was scored by Pirlo. Osvaldo had been subbed off in the 79th minute, Pirlo scored in the 89th minute.

Some of our fans have short memories when it comes to Rambo, they appear to have forgotten why he had lost form, the near career threatening injury has had a massive affect on his ability, and although it may appear to have happened a long time ago, it was always going to take time to sort itself out. there have been other issues, family and injury, which have got in the way. However now that is all behind him it is only a matter of getting fully match and physically fit before we will see the best of him. He is only 23 years old, has bags of talent which we need to tap into. All we need to do is to get behind him and demand that he produces the best for us. Constant criticism and doubt will drive him away, is that what you want?

Thats really not a very good comparison is it. I mean when are Poopey ever likely to play Chelsea. They won't ever even play them in the cup cuz they can't get past the first round. And they can't play them in the league cuz they won't be in it next year.

I think MP is spot on in regard to Ramirez. He seems to have a lot of natural talent and has clearly been getting much better in recent months. It has taken a while but we should definitely keep him as he is going to be good for us long term. Plus, unlike Osvaldo, he seems to have adapted quite well to life in England.

Yes I do want to see the back of him. I think if he plays in the WC his price will go up and we can get a better player with the transfer money. I don't think he is suited to the PL and I do not believe he will perform consistently for us. He would be a lot better in Italian football. How many games has he started and completed for us? On our limited budget we need players who can do the job week in and week out, not take a long time to acclimatise. We haven't had a very good return on our investment on GR.
