Poch happy to plan for Saints long-term

Basingstoke Gazette: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has insisted he is happy at Saints and is planning for the long-term – although he would not confirm if he has entered into negotiations over a new contract.

Pochettino’s current deal is due to run until the end of next season, and the Argentine said it was not yet a priority to discuss signing a fresh one.

However, there have been suggestions that Saints’ new board have already begun negotiating with him over extending his stay at St Mary’s, in a bid to ward off possible interest from other clubs this summer.

Chairman Ralph Krueger would not comment on that earlier this week, and Pochettino himself said he would “neither confirm nor reject” that talks had taken place.

“I don’t think it’s a priority to talk about that right now. It’s not important,” he said.

“My responsibility as first-team manager always remains the same, it’s always about this football club, about what’s best for this football club.

“Also in football, a contract does not guarantee you your future presence at the football club. It doesn’t guarantee it.

“I still have one more year on my contract, I’m happy with that, and I just want to keep on working at this football club, as I do normally.

“It’s not a priority for me to talk about future contracts.”

While Pochettino is correct that contracts in football only mean so much, it would nonetheless represent a strong statement from the new Saints board if they could tie him to a fresh deal.

Pochettino added: “I’m very happy that I’m here, I have one more year left on my contract here, and things will be dealt with and be negotiated in a natural way when they have to be spoken about.

“And, when I say that I’m not worried about it, I mean that in the sense that I’m always working for the future of this football club, I’m always thinking about the long-term, I’m always thinking about what’s best for this football club in the long-term.”

Krueger has already held “positive” discussions with Pochettino, and the pair were due to meet yesterday for the first time since the former ice hockey coach was officially appointed chairman.

Pochettino spoke of wanting to achieve a “very good working relationship” with the new man in charge at St Mary’s, and that he looked forward to listening to what the 54-year-old had to say.

While nearly two months had passed between the exit of former chairman Nicola Cortese and the arrival of the new board of directors, Pochettino revealed that his work with the first-team had been unaffected.

“The structure at this football club, especially regarding the first-team, is a very responsible and organised one, so we’ve already been thinking about the next season for a few months already,” he said.

“We’ve been thinking about the long-term, we’ve been looking at players’ schedules, especially this summer with the World Cup.

“It’s going to be a difficult thing to juggle everything regarding the end of the season, the pre-season, the World Cup.

“We’ve been organising that for some time now, and that’s just basically the responsibility that we have here at the club.”

Pochettino, who also said he had received nothing but “kindness and positivity” from owner Katharina Liebherr since she took on a greater role at the club, added: “My responsibility as a manager is not just about today. “It’s also about looking ahead towards the future, and it’s clear that we’ve been spending a lot of time looking at the next season.

“We’ve been planning many things about the next season.”

I had the misfortune in 1975 of being placed with foster parents in Cosham for 6 months..well a scummer in school on Portsea (st edmunds) did teach me how to look after myself and that is about the best that could be said…anyway back then whilst they hated Southampton most never went to Farton pk and supported the usual suspects, Chelsea, Liverpool Mufco etc….

…today every other person in pmuff is wearing their colors…in three visits I have never seen any other shirt unlike in our town..

…I believe that success will have truly arrived when if you are a Southerner (portsea excepted) you support the Saints end of..

The two most magnificent atmosheres I have ever experienced out side our good days, are Atletico Bilbao and Dortmund…everyone is totally loyal to the local club, parents would have their offspring removed for cruelty if they allowed them to support a plastic club.

Success therefore comes in two stages..one, we keep the best of the team and our manager…two, anyone allowing their children to support anyone other than Saints who lives in our catchment area should be hung drawn and quartered.

She is appointing strong team around her with international experience of business who also know about sport. Saints are now looking to be a very professional and stable football club, the envy of most others. It now looks as though they are setting about sorting out for next season.

Away we are a suprise to everyone, support is great, at home however to much wanting to be entertained and not involved…
Northam for me and closer to the goal the better is a great place to be, conversely against Villa we had tickets in the Itchen south and it was dire no-one and I mean no-one but our group would get involved, more atmosphere in böödy cinema.

It's important when comparing the support at St Marys and Shatton to recognise the huge qualitative difference between complex thought and primitive instinctive behaviour.

Saints fans support is based on sophisticated processing of observations and events and calculated and conscious decision making.

Skate support is based on a fixed and instinctive action pattern which does not involve conscious thought. For example newly hatched baby turtles when they emerge from their shells onto the beach, do not 'decide' to head to the sea; they simply do it without thought.

Shatton fans behaviour is also very similar to that of lemmings. They appear to be a quite normal rodents at first glance, but their strong biological urges cause catastrophic collapses of their community at regular intervals. They head over the cliff with great enthusiasm and commitment (indeed 'passion'), but with no cognisance that their behaviour is in fact mass suicide and therefore much worse than completely pointless.

If you think about it, it's obvious that you would only support PFC if you were not able to think.

I agree with most of your post but not the bit about Mopo, I suppose the truth will come out after the World Cup as to whether we are ambitious or not because we will then find out if AL and LS are staying and the squad being added to, or the opposite, I also think that if they go so will Mopo as he signed up for NC's vision of European success and not mid-table oblivion.

Right I avoided commenting after our FA cup exit but seeing as some can't let it go here's my opinion for what it is worth. I am thoroughly enjoying watching OUR team play an attractive style of football and not be involved in a relegation scrap. This somewhat arrogant notion that had we played a full strength team against Sunderland and we would have won the cup is frankly ridiculous. So in answer to your post yes I would rather finish 8th every year because I needn't fear relegation and can watch my team play football the right way week in and week out, and maybe given time and support (from fans and owner) MoPo might just get us playing in Europe. Rant over. COYR im off to bed to catch a few hours sleep before kick off.

Chipmonk1

Yes those jolly old skunks, how I wish i were them…however fuel to the flames, I wish we had a bit more of their passion…Northam Kingsland and Itchen North great but the rest of the ground needs to shape up...

I thought so.
Blimey Tony in Liberia as our man normally on the compassionate side of the United Nations front judging on you previous posts you have let your guard down their fella.
Warrens I have responded to you before about your misconception in my view about the skunts and your over-inflated view of their perceived passion but I respect your childhood experience.
Had the skunts moved away from the dilapidated Farton shed like we did with the Dell, I doubt we would be having this conversation. The Kop, The Clock, The Shed etc have all been sanitised, Poopey is just a sh1thole that is slowly being flushed from the football league, put you loo roll in the fridge and enjoy the ride/wipe.
