Saints’ loss to Sunderland has cost them a possible south coast derby against Brighton in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Brighton, who lie seventh in the Championship, host top-flight Hull in the fifth round tonight – the winners earning a home game against Gus Poyet’s Premier League strugglers in the next round.
Today’s draw also guaranteed a semi-final place for a team from outside the Premier League after Sheffield United or Nottingham Forest were drawn at home to Sheffield Wednesday or Charlton.
The other ties, which will be played over the weekend of March 8-9, are: Arsenal/Liverpool v Everton and Manchester City v Wigan.
