Perez sets sights on FA Cup silverware

Jesus Perez believes the FA Cup is a good opportunity for Saints to challenge for silverware this season.

But he also insisted the club will assess the fitness of their first team regulars before throwing them into action at Sunderland.

With Saints in good form and entrenched in upper mid-table, many fans are hoping they will prioritise an FA Cup run this season.

They have already won through to a fifth round tie at the Stadium of Light and many of the Premier League big guns are set to have exited the competition by the quarter-final stages.

Mauricio Pochettino admitted on Monday it would be very hard to name the same side during this run of three games in a week on heavy pitches, even if all his players were technically fit.

He also said he expected the full squad would be used.

There was just one change to the starting line-up for the game against Hull, suggesting Saints may make several more changes for tomorrow’s match.

Perez, assistant manager to Pochettino, said: “We did some changes from Stoke. Our squad is not massive now so the names around are always the same.

“We have to decide some decisions but we need to train and especially analyse from a physical point of view how they are recovering because some of the players are doing very well from a physical point of view but sometimes you need the extra day to fully recover.

“Always we always say the same after a game. We need a couple of days to assess the team.

“We played two games in the last four days, very tough games, also with the conditions and the weather as well.

"We will see how the players are recovering and who is available to play on Saturday.

“It is a game to win to stay in the next round, so obviously we will pick the best team to win.

“Always we did the same, but before Christmas, for example, you have a lot of games and have to rotate the players and use others.”

The only players definitely ruled out are centre half Dejan Lovren and midfielder Gaston Ramirez.

Perez, left, is hopeful they could both recover from ankle injuries they picked up against Sunderland in the league meeting between the sides last month in time for next weekend’s trip to West Ham.

He allayed fears over the fitness of Jose Fonte who posted a picture of himself on a social networking site with three nasty gashes on his leg.

Tomorrow’s match is the fourth time the teams have met this season with two draws in the league and a defeat for a much-changed Saints side in the Capital One Cup.

Perez insists the FA Cup represents a chance of success that Saints will be taking seriously.

“It is going to be an exciting game, an exciting opportunity to get into the next round,” said Perez. “The FA Cup is one of the traditional competitions around the world.

“For this situation, you are playing on a Saturday. If you watch a Spanish cup game, it is played 10pm, there are no kids at the stadium, the stadium is empty.

“It is a traditional competition and one you have to face with full focus.

“It is a good opportunity with how the draw is, some of the good teams are going to be out.

“Hopefully we will get the opportunity to play in the next round."

Morning guys, so if we can put out a strong team mainly our two center backs as we have the last couple games, and the usual rest, then we can definitely get a positive result tomorrow, even if its a draw and then we get to play them again at home,I'm sure we can get through to the quarter finals, especially if we do get a replay we would more then likely have lovren back which would be a massive boost, although have to say mya has down a great job in his absence, then depending on the draw u never know,I do believe we have an excellent chance this year in going all the way(fingers crossed) so mopo or Jesus if your reading this, please please please put out the strongest team possible,a trip to wembley is something you will treasure for the rest of your lives with the rest of us fans, like we did a few years back and also in 76, good luck guys for tomorrow, saint gee in sunny Malta

Lovren and Gaston back training so would be lovely if they feature. I hope we go for it and put a really attack minded team out. If we play like we did at Hull then Sunderland will need to be on their A game to match us. I hope Artur has calmed down a bit, crowds will soon pick up on the fact that if they give him a bit of stick his toys could come out the pram.

I noticed that at Hull we were trying to be a little more direct into the strikers. Hopefully Jrod and SRL have their shooting boots on.

Jesus is suppose to be in everyone's house goodness knows how he finds the energy although he'll never come in mine I'm atheist.
Jesus is a Christian name very common in Spain and Spanish speaking Countries, I lived in Spain for 12 years until last year and the first time I met a man called Jesus I hugged him and kissed him and told him I'd waited all my life to meet you, ok enough of this but it's true, to pronounce Jesus in Spanish is Who sus, Juan is Whun, Jose is Hossay, Spanish lesson over.

Lets us all hope and pray that tomorrow Sunderland will finally be put out of Saints misery because they have been a pain in the backside this season, it will be fantastic if this is the years for Southampton FC to once again win the FA Cup, it's 37 years since Saints won and I can still name the side, I'll never forget that day, it was sunshine and my Birthday and I had a bonus present, my ex wife threw her Salad Dinner over me because I wasn't paying her any attention for obvious reason, has anyone had Beetroot all over them?

We played the Mackems off the park in the first half up there last time, as good an away display as I’ve seen by anyone this year. Sadly, that old lapse of concentration of ours again after scoring our second allowed them to score and give them some belief just before the break. The second half was a different story because of that.
I would expect us to dominate them again and hope we take our chances and be ruthless this time. Although I don’t expect to see him start for them, Adam Johnson has been in stellar form this season. I just hope the weather does not ruin the game or the journey for our loyal fans.

Beetroot! That's not good, especially if you were wearing yellow.

I'll have my wife and her mother here tomorrow. Mother-in-law's flight lands as the match kicks off, so I've agreed to stay home and prepare lunch. I'm not yet sure how I can delay serving it until the final whistle blows but I'll certainly not be putting beetroot on the table.

Btw, thanks for the Spanish lesson, do let me know if you want an English lesson. :)

With 39 points already on the board, I think we can afford to experiment, certainly with youngsters, in league games.

Plus, I'd like to see if Katharina will copy her dad, and bring her camera to Wembley.

Christ, he'll end up tripping over his own hair won't he?!

BTW, whoever it was giving the Spanish lesson above, it's pronounced 'hey-zus' not 'who-sus'.

If JC didn't cut his hair, he'd look like JC with long hair as he has never scored for us and might never, remember Claus?

I was there in '76 as a 13 year old, what memories, when that goal went in perfect strangers were hugging each other, standing room remember, but those last 13 odd minutes were agony to watch. That final whistle, our end erupted and grown men were crying, the man standing next to me was sobbing. Still remember the ride back to Berkshire on the train with a huge smile on my face.

Monday at school, took a massive beating from the Man Utd hard boys at who sort me out. Didn't hurt as I was still on a high.

Back then, the FA Cup was the last game of the season. How things have changed.

1-2 to Saints tomorrow, showing live here in the US, early am start.

As a fan ofcourse I would love the opportunity to support the team at Wembley again like we did in the Johnstones Paint Trophy, I would also love for Katharina to sit in the same spot that her father did and experience the unbeatable wembley atmosphere and see why her father was so happy when he was there. Mostly though I would love the boys to win the FA Cup for themselves, they deserve it and have performed fantastically this season, probably the best season I have had the pleasure of being involved in. It would be such a nice way to top of a great season for the fans, the players, the manager and his team and the owners for there continued commitment and ofcourse in memory of the man himself our saviour 'Saint Markuss' gone but never forgotten.

Agreed. I cannot abide losing to the bigot Allardyce. His style of football brings the game into disrepute; we need to field a strong team and give them a football lesson. Everything about WHU is rotten.

Well done Seed - it's now clear that you love thy neighbour.

I've always believed your solid reputation on here (as a debauched, depraved, corrupt, degenerate, evil, licentious, unprincipled reprobate who is filled with vile wickedness, nefarious sin, dissolute depravity and lewd indecency) has been somewhat exaggerated.
That is exactly as the SKUNTS describe him on the Pompey site , personally I don't think he is evil .
Oh yes he is !
I bow to your superior knowledge, one question though with all these attributes why is he not a Tory government minister?
Lol , i'll let him tell that story .
or worse a labour minister intent on spending everyone else's money.
