Great talent Sam Gallagher needs time to develop, says Saints assistant boss

Basingstoke Gazette: SAM GALLAGHER SAM GALLAGHER

Jesus Perez has called on Saints fans not to pressure Sam Gallagher into being an instant replacement for Dani Osvaldo.

The 18-year-old starlet, who has been at the club for two years after joining from Plymouth Argyle, came off the bench to score his first senior goal in the FA Cup win over Yeovil.

Gallagher, from Crediton in east Devon, almost bagged a couple more too in an impressive display and looks like he could be the next hot young talent to come through at St Mary’s.

After the game many people were talking about whether Gallagher will provide Saints the necessary back-up should troubled Osvaldo leave before the transfer window closes on Friday evening.

However, Saints assistant boss Perez sounded a cautionary note.

He said: “He needs time and to work hard. It’s difficult for the young players with pressure, especially at a young age.

“Like other big talents we have at the academy, he needs time and work.

“He is still 18 so he needs to develop his body and his abilities but obviously he’s a great talent.

“It wouldn’t be fair to talk about not all the young talent because if we focus maybe only on one player maybe it’s not good for him.

“It’s better for Sam to stay relaxed and without pressure.

“Obviously if you appear in the first team and you play Premier League or FA Cup games you are in the spotlight, but it’s good for him to stay relaxed.

“He’s a good guy, he’s a very clever player, but he needs time to improve.”

Gallagher bagged a hat-trick for Saints in the FA Youth Cup third round tie against Portsmouth but will have to wait and see whether he is able to play when his young colleagues face Charlton on Wednesday night.

That’s because he could be in first team action as Saints face Arsenal in the Premier League tomorrow.

“We will see how he’s doing. Obviously he is still young and we have to be patient with him because it’s the same when the players appear in the first team there is a big explosion and then after it becomes a difficult situation for all youngsters,” said Perez.

“The most important thing when you are playing in the first team is to be consistent, and to be consistent you need to train more, you need to play minutes.

“He’s an important player and the situation at the moment we are with a couple of injuries is he’s one player more to help the first team.”

I remember less than 10 years ago reading a similar article about some kid named Adam Lallana.

I remember wondering why the hell wasn't Shearer playing against Oxford Utd, days after scoring a hattrick days before at Arsenal.

On the few times I have seen him, I like what I see.
This lad is busy.
He is constantly on the move, and trying to find pockets of space, to receive the ball.
He seems to like to receive the ball with his back to defenders.
He has pace to get a yard from them, to turn, or play someone else in.
His supply must be quicker to get the best from him.
A very good prospect I.M.O.

Yes but beware of false prophets...for every Adam Lallana (and there ain't many) there is a hundred Djamel Belmadi's, Léandre Griffit's, Yoann Folly's and Imants Bleidelis'.
So maybe your comment is the worse thing to come out of Canada since Jim Brennan...remember those dark days!!
I guess the difference is that these boys have made in Southapton tattoo'd on their ar$es, well at least moulded in the Southampton Way...actually made on the back seat of Mr Gallagher's ford Fiesta outside Flares in Exeter!

Had a e-mail from my cousin - a Saints season ticket holder - who likened Gallagher to a young Shearer.

This season is perfect for new guys to come through, we are safe already (although some Ars'e nal fan thinks we are looking over our shoulder and said we were well beaten back in November...!?? with help from Arturs River Dance and Clatterbrains performance!).
I would like to see young Sam start tomorrow night instead of Rickie (to give him a nice lift) Didn't Shearer score a hat-trick on his first start for Saints v Arse'nal??? .... can lightning strike twice??? Would be nice!

Or right backs? Chambers? lol.

We have 3 very highly rated CD's coming through, but they'll take a bit more time to come through. Both Jack Stephens, and Jordan Turnball have trained with the first team, while Josh Debayo at 18 has stepped up on occasion to the 21's.

For every player that makes it, hundreds don't. Saints have a knack of producing players, and their focus is more about creating players for their first team, than success at youth levels. What is incredible is that we are managing to produce so many kids capable of making the step up. Something to be admired and feel very proud of!
