Saints unlikely to make January signings

Mauricio Pochettino says Saints have “no intention” of signing anybody during the January transfer window.

Saints have been continually linked with a move for Italian centre half Davide Astori once again this month with many more rumours also doing the rounds.

Pochettino played down talk that Rickie Lambert or Dani Osvaldo could be about to depart the club, having already denied on numerous occasion that teenage left back Luke Shaw would be sold, and also scotched thoughts of a raft of January signings.

“We don’t have any intention to sign any players,” he said.

“In theory no we do not. There is no intention at the moment.

“There is still 22 days left in the transfer period and in that time we may change our minds but at this moment we don’t have any intention to buy any players.”

I think this a new approach from many teams now. For too long the January window has become a boon for greedy agents trying to push up commissions (and players pushing up wages) because teams either panic or think they must do business in this very limited window. Clubs have got savvy and will not use the January window to panic buy and land players at elevated wage levels. Unless of course a good player who they have identified as part of mid/long term strategy is made available at a sensible price.

So MP plays it cool; saying we don't need to buy but we might (if I feel it is right and at the right price). Agents then don't have the upper hand. Business may be done but it's own our terms. Sounds like a good plan!

I'm more than happy for us not to sign anyone, but my only slight concern is that if that's the case then we really need to tone down the Champions League talk a bit. It's great to aim high but we have to be realistic if we are working on a budget and bringing players through. Our squad at the moment is nicely worthy of top 10 and aspirations of sixth if we seriously over perform, but it does not yet have the depth of at least six teams in the division. As I said, that's fine, I think we are doing fantastically well and I'd rather be where we are bringing kids through and playing great football than a Chelsea of this world, but suggesting publicly that we can be top three is a little foolish if we have Hoover, Fox and Kelvin as our first reserves. Our cover elsewhere isn't that far off, but our bench compared to the really big boys is lacking for top three. It's perfectly good for where we are though and I'm happy - I think any club has to be sensible and accept that if they have a bad run of injuries they'll cope and cover and that's what we've done. When our first 11 is on the pitch we are a match for anyone in the league, home or away and that's good enough for me.

This would seem a more cautious way of saying if any players leave they may be replaced. There is no point in Saints paying inflated prices in January that is not the Southampton Way. We won't be bullied into any deals and only sign the players we want when we want them.

I think most of the panic purchases are made by the teams desperate to stay up or push for a European spot. NC and MP have most likely made the decision that we are good enough once the injured players return. This would appear to be borne out by our early season form. Eighth or ninth would be a very good achievement and then we can re-evaluate in the summer. We just need to get back on track with a few early wins so we can play through to the end with no fears and amass as many points as possible.

We've probably got a new five year plan.
Ninth this season.
Fourth next season and only qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champion's League
Premier league winners the season after and losing the C/L semi by the odd goal to Barca
Back to back Prem titles, the fa cup and the Champions League winning the final by six clear goals with hat tricks from Jay and Dani
The fifth year we will obviously win the Prem with 114 points and all other trophies we take part in and then won't lose another game till Saint Nicola gets bored and sells the club and it's worldwide franchises for £15 billion.
Of course there is a possibility this may not happen. We'll probably do it ahead of schedule just like last time.

Interesting article in the Daily Mail attempts to predict the current bottom ten clubs and where they will finish. It sees Wet Spam, Sunderland and Crystal Palace going down- that doesn't take rocket scientist to make that prediction. What is more interesting is that it does not include our team. It has Hull in 10th, Then Swansea and Villa. Would like to see what the top looks like!
