Rumour Mill: Even Poch linked with 'move'

Basingstoke Gazette: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

The January rumour mill has gone into overdrive with even Mauricio Pochettino linked with a move away from Saints.

An Italian website has claimed that the Saints boss is likely to leave St Mary’s in the summer.

The Daily Echo understands that the reports are inaccurate.

Pochettino has consistently said he is happy at Saints, and reiterated that just a few weeks ago when he was linked with the vacancy at Tottenham.

"As a manager what's really important is that the sporting aspect is under my control, in terms of signings," Pochettino said.

"Without my agreement no signings go through, and those two basic things are very important for any manager."

Pochettino is very loyal to executive chairman Nicola Cortese, and even threatened to quit the club if his boss left in the summer.

Saints have again been linked in Italy with a move for Italian international centre half Davide Astori.

Despite Mauricio Pochettino saying last week that they have no interest in Astori, the Italian media remain convinced that Saints are set to move for the player.

Italian paper Tuttosport claim that Saints are keen to add another defender to their ranks, with speculation reigning over the future of Japanese defender Maya Yoshida.

Saints were first linked with Astori in the 2012/13 season, when under the guidance of former manager Nigel Adkins. In the past, the Rossoblu, home to Astori for six years, had reportedly rejected Saints' advances.

However, it is now thought that they will change their stance, after Club President Massimo Cellino revealed that both Davide Astori and Radja Nainggolan could leave the club if the right offer came in.

If signing him means finishing say three places higher up the league than we are now will the increase in prize money offset his fee? if so then yes, get him in now, also he will be ready for the push towards another higher finishing place next season and maybe Europe.

Both players would without a doubt add quality. Nainggolan is a tough tackler and very skillful on the ball with great passing range, although wouldn't solve a winger spot but would be great in CM. I really hope we sign one if not both of them

Mrs Wilson says the club have pinned this one. The rumour came from the Carriere della Sera newspaper which picked up on the story in L'Arena which was quoting Alfo Adage reporting a piece in the Gazzetta dello Sport noting a column in Il Mattino reprinting a tale in Las Nazione, which was repeating a story in La Nova Venezia that Lotta Gossippa in Sicily was reporting that their sports editor heard a policeman say he had a letter from his brother in France whose Auntie's friend's husband said his neighbour thought Saints were going for Astori.

It all sounds a bit nebulous to me.

While Astoria could be a good player he seems to be one of these supposedly highly rated Italian-based players that's constantly linked with everyone. Personally I think the hit rate for successful players adapting to the Premier League is too low to be worth the risk. Gaston, Osvaldo and Lamela all seem to show the odd flash of brilliance but for the most part look woefully unable to get used to the pace and spirit of the English game.

Looking at our most successful signings of recent years I'd be happier if we looked to markets where we've got good value - either England or possibly France.

Hopefully Lovren could provide some insight into someone he'd like to play alongside he knows well from the French league or international duty, but clearly it probably doesn't work like that.

Indeed. Unless they are offering a nice swap deal plus cash for Gaston or Osvaldo I'd prefer a low-key but quality signing. We used to get linked a lot with Curtis Davies and that's seeming like a missed opportunity now. We need someone of his kind of level though, or better ideally. Assured would be the main attribute we need, comfortable on the ball with a tiny bit of pace but commanding and decisive most importantly - basically a Lovren clone :).

I don't think Osvaldo is a particularly big name, particularly now he's opted for just 'Dani' as a first name. If it's big you want I'd go for someone like Johannes Vennegoor of Hesselink or maybe even Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Admittedly, they're both a little past their 'prime' but just imagine how much money the shirt printer will pull in for us.

Really? He's been man of the match virtually every game for a defence that's done amazingly well this season. Kept Suarez completely quiet in their 1-0 win and is Hull's best player by a distance. If you're saying he's on a par with Hoover and Maya I think that's a little harsh, although Hoover has an amazing scoring record - practically an own goal every other game.

Can anyone with a better memory than mine please tell us all when we last signed a player who played for a Premiership team (Jack Cork didn't play for Chelsea)?

I think it's rather unlikely that we'll be doing it now. Players in the prem are too exposed to view and their prices too high.

Not really, we tend to go for Championship or Scotland if anything and have had significant joy with J-Rod and Clyne. Davis has been a very decent squad player too in my opinion.
Chaplow did once or twice for the Baggies I think.

don't think there is much doubt.
WHU are on their way down.
Not a comment drawn from spite.
They are having a nightmare with injuries and everything they try to do backfires.
I can see them going down and turning it back round to emerge stronger the season after.
Ricky would be foolish to go there.
He would be foolish to leave.
I don't think he is foolish, but what do I know?

Rickie wants to finish his career here and I don't think there's a single fan who would begrudge him that.

The only thing is, if we were to bring in some amazing new striker would we have to sell an existing one to make room in the squad? (I don't know, but I'm guessing not.)

Hard to judge Citeh in this game as Wet Spam were more than clueless. But they were beaten by a very, very good side. I thought it was great fun to watch.

Yes, Saints did very well against them but I will be glad when our visit to the Etihad is out the way. The goals this team scores there is amazing. Must have very happy season ticket holders.

Ref was hardly noticeable. Give him a pat!

Yes and that very nice Howard Webb was an excellent fourth official. I'm not creeping Howie baby but a couple of pens for the team in red would be very much appreciated this weekend. Thanks in advance for our 3-1 Victory.

Personally, I would be relieved if we made it through the transfer window with our squad intact. Having said that perhaps a decent back up keeper to marshal the defence and act as another mentor to Gazza & Cody wouldn't go a miss.
Reference Astori, I read an article where it said that he "switches off" at times during games too often, they even referred to him as the "Italian Titus Bramble"! No idea whether it's true or not, made me chuckle. It's amazing how such a small comparison can instantly turn you off someone!
Hopefully the West Spam result will finally put an end to any further SRL speculation as well.
Finally, referring to the Dalian Wanda link, I work for Sunseeker and I wouldn't be surpised if they are looking to get involved and it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Having said that, the news letter has showed the Chairman hosting visits from both Arsenal and Athletico Madrid delegations so it could be that the guy just really likes football?
