Saints facing test of character - Ward-Prowse

Basingstoke Gazette: James Ward-Prowse James Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse admits that Saints are missing the winning feeling, but he is certain the players possess the mental strength to overcome the adversity they are currently facing.

The 3-2 defeat at home to Tottenham means it is now six games without a victory in the league for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Many expected that Saints would take advantage of the recent turmoil at White Hart Lane, where manager Andre Villas-Boas has been dismissed and replaced by caretaker Tim Sherwood, but Ward-Prowse said the team knew Spurs were going to provide a challenging test.

“We’re disappointed to lose again,” said the 19-year-old. “I think we’re all missing the winning feeling.

“I think we were just beaten by a good Tottenham Hotspur side, who were obviously galvanised under the new manager.

“We knew before the game it would be difficult. Obviously, they’re trying to prove a point to the new manager and I think they did that.”

Saints have not won since the 4-1 demolition of Hull, at St Mary’s, in early November.

That run has seen them drop from a top-four position in the table down to ninth.

Ward-Prowse insists the players are confident they will turn their form around quickly, though.

“These sorts of things happen during the season, but it’s a test of character for us, and I know among us we’re mentally strong enough to get through that,” he said.

Saints will have a chance to respond to their latest setback when they visit Cardiff, another team who have been experiencing great uncertainty at the managerial position, on Boxing Day.

“As I said before, we’re missing the winning feeling,” reiterated Ward-Prowse.

“We’re going to go there, we’ve got plans to win the game and again it’s maybe a good time to play them, maybe a bad time, but we’re going to hopefully make it into a good time to play them.”

Despite Saints’ poor run, the team has still produced some strong performances.

“We’re playing well and that’s why we’re disappointed, because we’re not getting anything out at the end of it, but it’s a test of character and I’m sure we’ll come through it,” said Ward-Prowse.

Unsurprisingly, Saints’ downturn in results has come at a time when injuries have bitten hard.

Ward-Prowse conceded that the absence of various important players has made it a more challenging period for the club.

He said: “To miss a few key players, like Artur and Victor, it is difficult. They’re the core of the team.

“But that’s where others have got to step up and prove a point.”

Sort of yes and sort of no James.
Yes we have been affected by the heavy run of injuries and it is time for the fringe players to stand up to the plate. There is a fella that sits in front of me in the kingsland who jeers and berates every time the ball goes within 10 feet of Danny Fox. I'm sure he isn't the only one and I understand the frustration but i swear i am going to flick his earlobe one of these days! I dont like individuals being slagged but i guess he pays his money. Yes we need to get that winning feeling back starting on Boxing day.

Bad days like yesterday are the price that's paid for the joy we feel on the good days. It's the lows that give the highs some perspective.

And hey - maybe it'll be Boxing day.

Keep the faith - COYR!

There wern't too many complaining about Jos or Yoshida last season when they were first choice ahead of Jose. Their record of goals conceded wasn,t at all bad if you remove the first ten games or so from the stats. I agree about Foxy. It's not lack of effort but he just doesn't have the pace at this level and he was skinned on too many occasions yesterday. MoPo must be fully aware of his shortcomings as he pushed him into midfield for a while and put JW-P at LBr and when that didn't work he pulled him off. I doubt we will see him in a first team shirt again after yesterday's performance.Gazza's indecisiveness is a worry but at the end of the day he is our third choice and it shows. We really aren't getting the rub of the green at the moment either and that won't last forever either, plus first choice players will soon be returning. Nat Clyne is close as he only failed a late fitness test. Whilst playing badly and conceding stupid goals we still only lost by one goal to a club which has spent around £100mil Keep the fath.

3 of the games we haven't won, have been against teams that will, in all probability, finish in the top four (City, Arsenal and Chelsea).
The defeats by Villa & Spurs have to be put into context and we have to recognise that both of those teams have, I believe, better away form than home.
That just leaves the game against the bar codes, who were, nd probably still are, the form team.
Next up is Cardiff, who will probably be as motivated as the Spurs players, so another very stern test, to be followed by the team I consider a good outside bet to sneak the title.
Nothing is ever easy in this league, but that said, we have only looked as though we would get a good spanking, 2nd half at Chelsea and 2nd half yesterday, so not all doom and gloom.

The only comment I will make about Fox, is that he not only has a detrimental effect on the defence, but he also has the same effect on the attack.
His lack of pace means he seldom pushes as far forward, or as often, as Shaw, and yes I am aware of his part in our first goal.
No surprise that without Shaw's support, JRod had his quietest game in recent weeks.

Regarding Gazzaniga I remember Flowers as Shilton's understudy he came through slowly played a few games and was far from the finished article for years, unfortunately circumstances have thrown Gazza into the limelight along with a run of very hard games, he will hopefully one day be our 1st choice, it'd be good if Davies gets fit quick too because our defence looks very nervous at the moment.

AGREE

There is nothing more disheartening for Saints Fans than to go to HOME games or travel AWAY and see Danny or Jos on the Team Sheet.

Jose has improved and is part of the best Defensive pairings that we have with Clyne Shaw Artur and Lovren making up the Team. That said he still can and must improve further and another CB like Lovren would certainly tighten things up.

Clubs don't like spending money on Goal keepers but SFC made a right mess of it with just having a third choice keeper available and not having a GOOD Number 2. Having Kelvin on the books is a mistake and he is past his best and not good enough at Prem Level. Gazza is leaking goals like a sieve and 3 shots on target from Villa and Spurs has meant he has let in 6 goals. I would drop him - and sort the KEEPER SITUATION NOW.

We can forget the FA CUP for yet another season as we battle to secure points in the league. Games are not going to get any easier with Cardiff Everton and Chelsea and we need solutions ASAP.

NEVER PLAY FOX AGAIN FOR THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON AND JOS.

Posters are right - the youngsters have more about them including better decision making. Can you imagine if any other Team in the Premiership had gifted a goal like the own goal yesterday. The Papers are full of Adebeyor but should be full with ADAM LALLANA. We scored 2 very good goals yesterday but the defensive team let us all down.

MP needs to get his head out of the sand and start being decisive pretty sharply or his Season and that of the Club and Fans will soon evaporate. If he needs more Players or loanies - start sourcing them now or kiss goodbye to a Top Half of the Table Finish.

Every Team in the Premiership will be able to WIN against SOUTHAMPTON with Jos Danny and Gazza.

NO OTHER CLUB WOULD TOLERATE THIS A MINUTE LONGER THAN IT NEEDED TO.

SORT IT NOW !!

p.s ECHO give up on the thumbs up and down popularity contest for a Forum and start getting real opinions from the Fans. When David Crook is in the minus for asking when are the next 3 points coming from - he has a point if we continue with the 3 stooges - Danny Jos and Gazza.

GOOD POINT made about Shaw and JRod.

Danny did pass to Adan for the first goal yesterday - but it was a shocking decision to include him in the Team.

Outside the Chapel on the chalk board was SAINTS 2 SPURS 0. That could have been the reality - but as soon as the Team News - it was predictable we would leak goals.

It's quite feasible that Poch is playing a bit of a blinder here, In playing some of the weaker players in the squad... to convince NC to spend in the transfer window. Or maybe those weaker players where being given their last chance to prove themselves. It seems a bit strange that Shaw has admitted on twitter that he could have played. That and having Fonte on the bench don't seem to add up. I know they have a few games In a short period, but you always start with your strongest team surely.

As far as Luke is concerned it may be that he missed some full training sessions, that usually results in not being selected, however it would seem strange that Fox who hasn't played for ages gets picked, as you say he may have been in the shop window, he could do a reasonable job in the Championship, whatever if was a risk, it failed in the event.

Well we did Tim Sherwood a favour, he has got the job until end of 2014-2015 Season, Hope he remembers the favour later,

Arse and Chelsea 0 - 0 FT tonight, both teams trying out-simulate each other and Mike Dean letting them get on with it. Liverpool top at Christmas.

Two minutes before Spurs equalized Rodriguez had an excellent chance to make it 2-0, but just popped it over the bar. If that had gone in I think it would have killed the game off. Saints were in control at that time and Spurs heads would have dropped. But that didn't happen. They scored and got their confidence back. That's just the way it goes. Sometimes it's a confidence game as much as anything. Spurs showed their resolve to stay in the game and it worked for them. It can work for us, too. COYS.
