Hoddle backed for Spurs job

Basingstoke Gazette: Glenn Hoddle Glenn Hoddle

Former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker has called for Glenn Hoddle to be appointed as the club's new manager.

Andre Villas-Boas was sacked on Monday morning after a heavy defeat to Liverpool, having only taken charge at White Hart Lane in the summer of 2012.

Former Saints manager Hoddle - a Tottenham great as a player - managed the club between 2001 and 2003 after leaving Saints but has been out of management since he left Wolves in 2006.

But Lineker feels that now is the time for him to make a return.

England's record goalscorer wrote on Twitter: "AVB has been sacked by Spurs. Would love to see Glenn Hoddle given another chance at this level. Has a brilliant football mind."

Villas-Boas watched on as Spurs were beaten 5-0 by Liverpool, just three weeks after a six-goal thrashing at Manchester City.

That loss at the Etihad Stadium prompted former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar to call for the Portuguese to be sacked and Sir Alex Ferguson to be appointed.

Sugar had scaled down his expectations on Monday, though, tweeting: "Spurs need to put Les Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood in charge for a while".

I agree!

Pocho has surely bought into the Saints project and will hopefully stick with it. The weight of expectation at Spurs would be heavy and Pocho is better advancing his managerial career with success at Saints. Failure at Spurs would harm him.

spuds are a team that's falling part at the seams and are there for the taking. the fans wont be happy unless they get honest `arry back and the players look like they haven't met each other before and don't know what they are meant to be doing on the pitch. they won games they shouldn't have last year because they had bale, home and away to us, to get them out of trouble. bales gone and despite spending big thy can never replace him. we must not be complacent though, but I cant see any result other than a home win on sunday.
they can forget about trying for MP as a replacement, they might have got twaddle from us but he wanted to go and the dark lord wanted some cash! they wont find it so easy to deal with the don and will be firmly sent on their way.

Zola quits as Watford boss, if only the fish had waited!
