BASINGSTOKE music fans are in for a treat as legendary songwriter Richard Carpenter brings his UK tour to The Anvil in September 2024.

Best known as one half of the best-selling duo of the 1970s, The Carpenters, this is the first time Richard will be performing and sharing stories behind their hits.

Over the course of the tour, Richard will recount memories of his late sister, Karen Carpenter, as they became one of the most successful duos in music history.

Their melodic hits and timeless songs will be brought back to life on stage, reviving nostalgic moments for the audience.

Basingstoke locals will enjoy Richard's insights into an impressive career marked by a fortuitous encounter in December 1969 with Burt Bacharach.

That meeting saw the duo open for Bacharach at a charity concert, and led to Richard’s reinterpretation of the Bacharach/David song (They Long To Be) Close To You.

Without being influenced by previous artists' renditions, Richard constructed a fresh arrangement resulting in the song's successful version which debuted at No. 56 and later reached No. 1 on July 25, 1970, holding its position for four consecutive weeks.

In autumn 1970, Richard discovered For All We Know, recognising its potential and leading to another Carpenters' hit.
