A WRONG road sign has been put in place on a main Basingstoke road - but no one seems to know who is responsible for it.

The sign, located near the Winchester Road roundabout, instructs drivers to turn left for Southern Road and take a U-turn for 'Bounty Lane'.

However, an alert resident pointed out there is no such lane in Basingstoke, only a Bounty Road roughly 0.6 miles away.

The Gazette first contacted Hampshire County Council, which confirmed the signage error.

A council spokesperson said: "This signage relates to a temporary road closure implemented by Openreach on Bounty Road. We have contacted Openreach requesting that they update their signage to correctly refer to Bounty Road, rather than Bounty Lane.”

Openreach however, has told the Gazette they are not responsible for the sign.

A spokesperson said: "It’s all very mysterious but we’ve checked all engineering teams and none of them know anything about it.

"There are, however, multiple permits for Virgin Media in the area."

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: "We don’t recognise this sign to be ours.

"We have recently completed works in the area, but this didn’t require a diversion of traffic."

The Basingstoke Gazette has gone back to Hampshire County Council for comment.
