A SIGN in Basingstoke is perplexing drivers as it features a place name from a different county.
The sign, in Worting Road, has an arrow to the left for Kempton, and to the right for Kings Furlong. However, there is no place called Kempton in the Basingstoke area.
Theories for the sign featuring a seemingly random place name range from a misspelling of Kempshott to Kempton racecourse in Sunbury on Thames or a small village in South Shropshire which shares the same name.

A driver posted a picture of the sign on the Spotted Basingstoke Facebook group, saying: "Lived in Basingstoke my whole life. Can anyone tell me where Kempton is?"
A post of the sign was shared again in December, reading 'Where is Kempton?'
A Hampshire County Council spokesperson said: “We have looked into this, and the sign was part of temporary traffic management which has now been removed. We are sorry for any confusion and inconvenience caused.”
