A STRAY firework is thought to have caused a fire in Basingstoke on New Year's Eve.

Fire crews from Basingstoke and Overton were called just after midnight on New Years Eve, Sunday, December 31 to a home on Warwick Road.

A spokesperson from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said "it is believed the fire was caused by a stray firework".

They added: "The fire involving ivy on the outside of the property was extinguished using hose reels and jets.

"Firefighters returned to station at 3am after completing a home fire safety visit."
