THE council is launching its annual Autumn Nights campaign to help keep Basingstoke and Deane safe through the season.

With Halloween and Bonfire Night just around the corner, the council's community safety patrol officers will be running the campaign to give residents advice on personal safety, responsible trick-or-treating and be respectful to those who may not wish to take part.

The officers will be out patrolling across the borough in the run-up to Halloween and Bonfire Night, visiting shops to offer advice about the responsible sale of items such as flour, eggs and fireworks.

They will also be visiting sites where illegal bonfires have been held previously and liaising with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service where necessary.

The council is asking residents to be considerate of vulnerable neighbours, animals and wildlife if lighting fireworks at home.

Cabinet member for communities, partnerships and inclusion, Cllr John McKay, said: “Halloween and Bonfire Night can be a lot of fun for some, but for others it can be a distressing time. We want everyone to enjoy the festivities, to stay safe and to respect others.

“Vulnerable residents, people living with post-traumatic stress disorder and animal owners may not enjoy the traditional autumn festivities. We also want to make sure that young people who are trick or treating keep safe and don't cause issues for other people.

“Our community safety patrol team can offer support, advice and information.”
