AN RAF mechanical engineer from Hook is getting to ready to compete in this year’s Invictus Games after suffering “one of the worst leg injuries” just 18 months ago.

Chief Technician David Moncrieff, 40, will be part of the Royal British Legion (RBL) team of veterans and military personnel competing in this year’s Invictus Games.

David's impressive military career includes 14 tours of duty in Afghanistan, three tours in Iraq, and serving as the chief engineer for the Chinook Display Team for two seasons.

He has always led an active lifestyle and possesses an unyielding passion for pushing his limits and embracing new challenges.

However, 18 months ago, while training for the RAF riding championships, David's life took an unexpected turn. A horse-riding accident resulted in a complex spiral fracture to his tibia and fibula, which left him with “one of the worst leg injuries” doctors had ever witnessed.

Despite undergoing surgery, he developed acute compartment syndrome, necessitating an emergency fasciotomy to save his leg.

The incident profoundly impacted David, both physically and mentally.

Adapting to his changed physical capabilities was a struggle, and his mental health suffered as a consequence.

It was through his involvement in horse riding that he encountered a former Invictus Games competitor, who encouraged him to apply for Team UK.

"I want to prove to myself and my son and family that yes, I might have a leg that doesn't really work very well, but it's not going to stop me," David said.

The upcoming Invictus Games, an international adaptive sporting event, provide an extraordinary platform for veterans like David to showcase their determination, resilience, and unwavering spirit.
