MPs are bombarded with more than 3,000 offensive tweets every day, according to a recent investigation. 

According to the research, covering six weeks between March and April this year, one in every 20 tweets sent to MPs was deemed to be ‘toxic’.

Figures provided to the Gazette by the BBC’s Shared Data Unit revealed the number of toxic tweets sent to Hampshire MPs in and around Basingstoke.

Female MPs were marginally more likely to receive abuse including terms such as “thick” and “ignorant”.

And, to be subjected to sexualised language.

Meanwhile, their male counterparts were more likely to be called “liars”.

Basingstoke MP Maria Miller received 24 toxic tweets during the time period of the investigation. She has more than 21,000 followers on the social media platform and tweets daily. 

One user sent 128 toxic-rated tweets to male MPs and 85 to female MPs during the time period.

Conservative MP for North West Hampshire Kit Malthouse received a shocking 254 toxic tweets.

The investigation found that Conservative MPs were nearly twice as likely as a Labour MP to receive a tweet classed as severely toxic.

Ms Miller and Mr Milthouse have both been contacted for a comment but have not responded to the Gazette.

Ranil Jayawardena who is an MP for North East Hampshire received just four toxic tweets during the investigation.

He has also been commented for a comment but has not yet responded.

All 20 of the MPs to receive the most abuse proportionally were not members of the cabinet or shadow cabinet. 

The words "stupid" and "pathetic" were the two most commonly used adjectives in the tweets analysed during the investigation.
