POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was reportedly punched to the ground and a police officer assaulted outside a shop in Basingstoke.

Just before 11pm on Friday, July 29, officers were called to a report that a young woman had been assaulted outside The Squirrels antique shop on New Street in the town centre.

She had been punched to the ground and knocked unconscious. She sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Police attended the scene and one officer was assaulted following the original incident. 

A 23-year-old man has been arrested.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We have been making enquiries and are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"Officers believe there were people in the area that may have seen the incident.

"Were you in the area at the time? Did you witness the incident? Do you have any CCTV images or dash-cam footage that could help our investigation?"

As part of enquiries, a 23-year-old man from Basingstoke was arrested on two counts of suspicion of assaulting a person occasioning them actual bodily harm. 

He has been released on conditional bail and enquiries are ongoing.
