FIRE crews scrambled to Old Basing on Friday, July 29 after a bonfire got out of control.

Tadley and Basingstoke firefighters were called to the bonfire which had grown out of control and had spread to trees on London Road. 

Crews were joined by support vehicles from Hartley Wintney and Fleet shortly before midday.

Hose reels, jets and drag forks were used to access and extinguish the fire before firefighters dampened down, leaving the scene at 1.10pm with the expectation with bonfire would continue to smoulder for a number of hours. 

Posting to Twitter, Hartley Wintney crew said that the service had received "multiple calls" about the blaze, because "the incident was visible from the A30".

They added: "Large smoke plume and fire developing close to woodland and railway line."
