THE road southbound on the link between Black Dam roundabout and the M3 at Junction 6 is now open after an overturned lorry has been recovered.

Heavy traffic built up in the area, with delays on Ringway East from the A33 Reading Road yesterday (April 26).

AA Traffic news stated that an incident involving a "rolled over truck" had caused the closure, while drivers reported queues and heavy emergency service presence.

Hampshire Police have now confirmed the road is open.

A spokesperson said: "Just a quick update for you that the M3 between the Black Dam Roundabout in Basingstoke and Junction 6, which was closed overnight for the recovery of an overturned lorry, reopened earlier today.

"The road is now fully open as normal - many thanks for your patience while we dealt with this incident."

The incident was first reported by the traffic updates site at 4.44pm on Tuesday, but members of a Hampshire Drivers Facebook group said that the situation for commuters "got worse" throughout the evening.

One described the delays on surrounding roads as "chaos" while others said it would "take hours to clear".

Basingstoke Police asked people to avoid the area, and warned of further disruption as the recovery took place.

In a Tweet, they wrote: "We're asking motorists to avoid the Black Dam Roundabout this evening if possible.

"An HGV turned on its side this afternoon and partly blocked the exit leading to the M3.

"More road closures around the roundabout are likely this evening when the lorry is recovered."
