A CLIMATE group in Basingstoke is helping a national charity organise a tree planting event in Dummer this weekend.

Basingstoke Transition Network (BTN) is supporting Possible, a climate change charity, to plant trees on a farm on January 29 and 30 (Saturday and Sunday).

Martin Heath from BTN said: “Planting trees and re-wilding our farmland is an important direct and positive action we can all take.

“Trees suck carbon dioxide out of the air; they provide a unique habitat for other plants and animals. Planting more trees is an ideal first step to do more about the climate emergency.

“So if you want to do something positive to combat climate change and have a fun day out in the countryside then do please join us.

“There’s a free lunch too. We are planning a series of events and actions over this year with the dual aims of raising awareness about the climate and ecological crisis and taking steps to combat it”.

BTN has long been campaigning for action to combat the climate and ecological emergency.

The group said they have been active in lobbying councillors and MPs, by sending endless letters and attending numerous council meetings.

The Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has declared a climate emergency and pronounced it will make the region a carbon neutral borough by 2030.

“So progress is being made, but it is to slow,” said Mr Heath.

“It is far too slow. In the 2.5 years since the emergency declaration carbon emissions in the borough have hardly changed from where they were in 2019.”
