Police have launched a murder investigation after two people were found dead at a property in Basingstoke.

A woman in her 20s and a man in his 60s died at Buckland Avenue in the early hours of Sunday (June 20).

Tonight, the residential street remains cordoned off as enquiries continue.

What happened?

Emergency services were contacted in the early hours of the morning following concerns for welfare at Buckland Avenue in South Ham.

Officers attended and discovered two people – a man in his 60s and a woman in her 20s – who had sustained serious injuries.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification procedures remain ongoing at this time, Hampshire Constabulary said.

Has anyone been arrested?

A 52-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at this time.

Police said they believed "all parties" were known to one another.

Why is Buckland Avenue still closed? 

Basingstoke Gazette:

Buckland Avenue was cordoned off at around 4am, according to residents. As of 8pm tonight, the cordon remains in place. 

This is to allow police to carry out their investigations. 

What have the police said?  

Detective Superintendent Neil Corrigan is urging anyone with information to contact them. He sad: “We understand this incident will come as a shock to the local community.

“Please be reassured that we have a number of officers working hard at the scene and the surrounding areas to establish the exact circumstances, and a man is in custody.

“We believe all parties involved in this incident were known to one another.
