THREE goals in the final 10 minutes saw Basingstoke Town beat visiting Horndean 5-1 and booked their place in the semi-final of the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Wessex League Premier Division outfit Horndean put up a plucky display, against a side three leagues above them.

The Dragons made five changes to the side which won against Maidenhead last Saturday, as Rob Rice, Jay Gasson, Ryan Case, Shaun McAuley and Lloyd Macklin all came into the starting line-up.

Rice slotted into a back four with Gasson and Case in the middle, while Macklin played up front with Chris Flood.

The home side started brightly as Rice found plenty of room to roam down the flanks and Macklin and Flood both had early chances from his crosses.

As the half wore on Horndean got themselves into the game and Nathan Kirby saw his free-kick from the edge of the area tipped over by Aaron Howe.

A spell of good town pressure saw three corners in quick succession, the last saw Case force a great one handed save from Derek Harding.

Just two minutes into the second half and Horndean's Ian Humble was denied by a block on the line from Tom Bird.

The home side made the most of the let off, as Bird who really came into the game after the break, saw his cross deflected in off a visiting defender.

Just after the hour mark, Dan Hayes was book for a crude challenge on McAuley. From the resulting free-kick Bird played the ball into sub Liam Enver-Marum who slotted home with a clinical finish.

At this point, the visitors had their best spell with Robbie Tambling looking very lively up front and he pulled a goal back, after he netted his own rebound following a good save from Howe with 10 minutes left.

The Dragons roared back and two minutes later, a sweet free-kick from Bird flew into the net from 25 yards out.

Sub Louie Soares then made it 4-1 as he thumped the ball into the top corner and Enver-Marum scored number five as he slotted through the legs of Harding in the final minute.

The victory earned Town an away tie at Havant and Waterlooville to be played next month.

Next up for the Dragons is a league trip to Wealdstone on Saturday (3pm).
