BASINGSTOKE Town will be hoping to turn their cup form into league points when Chelmsford City return to The Camrose in the National League South.

The sides know all about one another ahead of Saturday's game (3pm), having met in the FA Cup at the same venue last week.

Town secured their place in the fourth qualifying round of the competition with an impressive 4-2 win, extending their unbeaten run to five games and making it three wins out of four.

However, they are yet to taste victory in a league match and sit bottom of the table after amassing just six points from 12 games.

It's the lowest number of points Town have had at this stage of the season since the Conference South was introduced in 2004 – and manager Jason Bristow is targetting nothing less than a win.

"Getting through in the cup competitions is great, but we need three points in the league now," he said. "In the back of my mind, I'm always aware that we are yet to win in the league and need to climb the table, so we will be fully focussed on Saturday.

"If we can get a win, it would be six games unbeaten and we would have a solid foundation to build from."

Town's reward for reaching the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup is a home tie against National League side Torquay United, a game that will be played at The Camrose on Saturday, October 24.

Basingstoke last met the Devon club in the second round of the same competition back in 1989, when a young Bristow was among the crowd as Torquay won 3-2.

He said: "It's a great draw against a really big club in Torquay United. I was on the terraces the last time the teams met at The Camrose and it should be a fantastic tie.

"It's the kind of draw that will hopefully mean a big crowd and it's a tie we will be hoping to win in order to reach the first round proper."

Town impressed in their win over Chelmsford last week, defending strongly, creating chances and scoring goals.

Confidence seemed to grow as the game went on and Bristow is hoping that his side can put in a similarly good display when the sides meet again.

"Players get confidence from scoring goals, playing well and winning. It was nice not to go behind on Saturday and while we had a few ropey moments at 2-1, the guys put their bodies on the line and protected the lead.

"We have been threatening a good performance of late. We had a lot more shots on goal and it was a good performance from the whole squad.

"It was really pleasing to see us scoring goals. They were all good goals as well, either nice team goals or individual efforts.

"It's important that we do not get carried away though. We need to work just as hard as we did on Saturday, create opportunities and be equally clinical in front of goal."

Jamie Brown remains on the sidelines with a groin injury but Bristow's midfield options will be boosted by the return of Shaun McAuley, who was suspended last week, while Simon Dunn could also feature.

However, Harrison Gilkes impressed in a central midfield position last week, and the returning players could find it difficult to get back into the team.

Bristow said: "If both Shaun and Simon are back, we will have good options in midfield, but I thought Harrison Gilkes had one of his best games for us on Saturday.

"Playing a bit more central, he got on the ball, was positive and had a hand in three of the four goals."
