TOTALLY Tennis performance player Liam Hignett won the Waverley Club Singles event during a fun weekend of tennis held at Waverley Tennis Club.

The weekend, which attracted 34 competitors, included a singles event and an American Doubles competition.

Most of the matches were contested in Wimbledon style on grass.

In the singles event, competitors played tie-break sets to determine the quarter finalists and then one set matches to six in the quarter and semi-finals and then played to nine in the final.

Hignett won all his matches on the first day beating Tom Dainton 10-6, Mark Janson 10-8, Jordan Mosquera 10-1, Jack Dainton 10-4 and Ahmed Shahir 10-7 to reach the quarter-final stage.

The Totally Tennis player then defeated Mark Janson 6-2 in the last eight.

In the other quarter-finals Andy Nicholls beat Jon Mosquera 6-3, Saul Irwin defeated Luke Watts 6-2 and Kelsey Mosquera won against Tom Dainton 6-1.

Hignett enjoyed semi-final success against Kelsey Mosquera 6-2 and then won the final against Irwin 9-4.

He received his winner’s trophy from Waverley Tennis Club chair Jean Chedgey.

Waverley’s Perveez Mirza organised the event.

Younger sister and mini performance player Isla also entered the event and although she did not win any matches, she received a medal for being the youngest player to compete.

In the American Doubles competition the winners were Tom Dainton and Joe Shevlin with Jordan Mosquera and Mark Janson the beaten finalists.
