YOUNG Basingstoke tennis ace Esther Adeshina played a major part as David Lloyd Southampton claimed the AEGON Team Tennis Premier 14-and-under girls title at the National Tennis Centre, Roehampton.

The finals featured winners from the north (USN Bolton Arena), midlands (David Lloyd Cardiff), south east (Gosling Sports Park) and south west (David Lloyd Southampton).

The winning team was 11-year-old Adeshina, Ellie Millard, Thandiwe Mlambo and Maryam Williams – seeded two in the finals behind Gosling Sports Park.

The match format was four singles and two doubles rubbers and in their semi-final clash Adeshina and her team mates beat USN Bolton Arena 10-2.

Adeshina won her singles match against Sarah Glover 6-2 6-0 and partnered Maryam Williams to a 6-2 6-3 doubles success over Bolton duo Hannah McColgan and Charlotte McDonald.

That set-up a final against Gosling – and Adeshina got her team off to the perfect start against Amelia Campbell, three years her senior.

The 11-year-old raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set. Campbell battled back to 3-2 and the next four games were shared, leaving the Basingstoke player to serve for the set – which she did, winning it 6-4.

Campbell got on top in the second set, cruising to a 5-2 lead and serving for the set, but Adeshina dug deep, saved three set points and went on to level at 5-5, which soon became 6-6.

The Basingstoke player completed the comeback with a 7-2 victory in the tie-break to take the match 6-4, 7-6.

Her team-mates completed a clean sweep of singles wins, but all were battles – being decided in a first to 10 third set tie-break.

Maryam, Thandi and Millard also battled hard against their Gosling opponents, winning their matches 6-2 4-6 10-0 and 6-3 3-6 10-8 respectively.

That gave David Lloyd an 8-0 advantage, so the doubles were not contested.

Adeshina also competed in the Grade One AEGON 12-and-under Clay Court National Championships at Queenswood School, Hertfordshire.

The St Bede’s pupil lost to Surrey’s Gemma Heath in the semi-final after wins over Kent’s Abby Taylor, Emma Raducanu and Hertfordshire’s Indianna Spink.

Teaming up with Indu Ragunather (Buckinghamshire) she made it all the way to the doubles final, knocking out the top seeds on the way.

In a tight final the pair lost 6-4 6-4 to Surrey’s Heath and Sasha Hill.

Adeshina also enjoyed success at the national Grade 2 Scottish Junior Open 12 and Under Girls event at the Craiglockhart Tennis Centre, Edinburgh.

The Basingstoke player won four games before losing to top seed Ola Pitak 6-2, 6-0 in the singles final.

She had more success in doubles with Dorset’s Erin Richardson, defeating the Buckinghamshire duo of Erika Dodridge and Indu Ragunather 6-3 6-3.

Adeshina made the final of the HSBC Road to Wimbledon 14 and Under National Challenge, which takes place between August 12 and 18.

The 11-year-old booked her place at SW19 after winning the Hampshire event at Canoe Lake, Southsea, defeating Avondale’s Helena Mason and Ruth Wilson and Winchester Tennis Club’s Mary Strevens in the final.
