TOTALLY Tennis Performance players Miles Bromilow and Liam Hignett played in the Road to Wimbledon county finals held at Canoe Lake, Southsea on Wimbledon finals weekend.

Bromilow, who won the club event held at Totally Tennis, and Hignett, who was the runner-up, were part of a draw of 32 Hampshire players.

On the first day, Hignett beat Russell Cairns 4-0, 5-3 in his first match, followed by Winchester’s Matteo 4-0 4-2 in the second round.

He then defeated George Rawlings in a close three-set match, losing the first set 5-4, then winning the second 4-2 and the tie-break 10-7, putting him through to the semi-final on the second day.

Bromilow won his first two rounds, beating Matthew Pybus 4-1, 4-0 and Russell Bennett 4-1, 5-3, but lost out in the quarter-finals to Jake Norris (5-4, 4-0).

On Day Two, Hignett played well, beating higher rated player Matthew Whitehead 6-2, 6-2 to book his place in the final.

The Totally Tennis player then came up against a formidable opponent in the final, Austin Gwilliam, who is a 5.1 and ranked 33 nationally, 245 places above Hignett.

Both boys played well but Gwilliam canme out on top, winning 6-3, 6-2.

Hignett still has a possibility of qualifying through to the finals, to be held at Wimbledon from August 12, as one of the 20 runners-up that go through along with the 44 county winners, but that will be decided nationwide depending on player rating.

Both Gwilliam and Hignett received glass trophies and all the players received a HSBC Road to Wimbledon backpack and a bandana for participating in the event.

Coach James McIntosh said: “Liam went through as the club runner-up and played really well over the two days of competition to play in the final and finish as overall runner-up of the county event. Fingers crossed that he is awarded a place in the line-up to play at SW19 in August.”
