BASINGSTOKE RFC gave London One South leaders Wimbledon a real fright when these sides last met in December.

The league leaders escaped from Down Grange with a 23-20 victory thanks to a late penalty.

This weekend, the sides meet again at Wimbledon in a top against bottom clash.

’Stoke have nothing to lose again and would love a late season scalp, while Wimbledon know one slip up could cost them the title and could ultimately see them miss out on promotion.

At Down Grange, Basingstoke built up a 10-0 lead early on as Matt Woodhouse scored a try, converted by David Byett.

Only the boot of Neil Hallett kept them in the contest in the first 40 minutes and eventually it was his winning penalty that kept the leaders on track for the title.

Wimbledon have lost two of their last five outings, both against sides chasing them for the London One South title, Chobham and Sutton and Epsom.

The Sutton defeat was their last outing at home and it was a thriller as Sutton won 13-12.

Wimbledon returned to winning ways in their last game a fortnight ago, recording a comfortable 39-17 victory at Brighton.

They are sure to want to put on a show in what is their final home game of the season.

Meanwhile, ’Stoke are still searching for their second win of 2015, having won on the opening weekend of the year.

They were forced to concede their last away game at Twickenham as injuries and unavailability left them without a front row.

This time around they have a full squad to pick from, so the game at Wimbledon is not in doubt.

’Stoke’s last outing saw them beaten 62-12 at home by high-flying Sutton and Epsom, but it was a marked improvement on the previous game, which saw them crushed by Havant.

Tom Tully grabbed a brace of tries and Basingstoke will travel to Wimbledon looking to put points on the board once again.

Chairman of playing Steve Parker said: “There is no pressure on us as we are already relegated and I want us to go out and express ourselves.

“We played some very good rugby against an excellent Sutton side and I expect Wimbledon to be just as good, but we will go there with no fear.

“The boys were upbeat after the Sutton game and I see no reason why we cannot score a few more points this time around. We need to keep possession and get the ball out to our wingers so they can exploit their pace.

“We have just two games left this season and it is very much a case of trying to build a new unit for next season.

“We are improving every game and the players always give 100 per cent, which is all I can ask for as a coach.”

Matt Woodhouse, who scored against Wimbledon at Down Grange, is expected to be in the line-up at Wimbledon, while Ben Hawkins will once again be on scrum-half duties.

Parker added: “Ben Hawkins had an outstanding game against Sutton and I felt Adam MacDonald also was a big plus for us in that game. Both will be playing at Wimbledon.”
