Gavin Griffiths extended his Hampshire loan until the end of the season - and then took three wickets in the Second Eleven Championship.
Hampshire confirmed that Griffiths, who is ineligible for the Specsavers County Championship match against his parent county, will stay until the end of next month after Lancashire announced the 22 year-old seamer will not be retained at the end of the season.
Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said."We will see where we are with Gavin at the end of the season.
"He's certainly doing well and impressing at the moment and we'll make our decision as the season pans out."
Griffiths responded by taking 3-77 as Essex rattled up 415-6 declared on the first two days against Hampshire II at Coggleshall CC.
Right-arm seamer Andy Carter, who has also joined Hampshire until the end of the season after being released by Derbyshire, dismissed the Essex openers in his first six overs for the county.
Hampshire collapsed to 30-4 in reply before Jake Goodwin and Fraser Hay mounted a recovery.
Hampshire bowling: Carter 21-4-80-2, Tomlinson 17-5-50-0, Griffiths 17.1-3-77-3, Searle 9-0-65-0, Taylor 12-1-63-1, Organ 2-0-18-0, Hay 5-0-30-0, Goodwin 4-0-31-0.
