BASINGSTOKE’S Andrew Cloke was unable to lead Hampshire’s professional golfers to victory over their amateur rivals in an annual match played at Hockey GC earlier this month.

Cloke, who is this year’s PGA in Hampshire captain, had a good day himself, taking 1½ points from his two matches, but it was a bad day overall for the county’s professionals, who lost 9-6 to the amateurs of Hampshire Golf.

The damage was done in the morning fourballs, with the amateurs winning four of the five matches played. Cloke and partner James Ablett managed to have their match against Gavi O’Neill and Haydn Reay, but the professionals trailed 4½-½ heading into the afternoon singles.

The amateurs needed to take just 3½ points from the 10 singles matches to win, but the pros made a great start, taking 3½ points from the first four matches to trail by a single point.

However, the next four matches were all won by amateurs, securing overall victory, and while Cloke got the better of Sam Day in his match, the professionals lost 9-6 overall.
