ODIHAM hockey star Alex Danson scored the second goal, as England beat Germany 2-0 to claim the bronze medal at the EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam.

It was captain Danson’s ninth medal in a row whilst playing for England and Great Britain women at a major international tournament.

Germany beat England 1-0 in the group game and once again it was a tight encounter.

It was the Germans who created the first clear cut chance thr ough Anne Schroder, but Maddie Hinch was equal to her shot.

England responded strongly and won three penalty corners before the first break.

The end-to-end nature of the game continued, Danson collected in the corner before crossing to Sophie Bray, but her effort flew just wide of the post.

Immediately after this at the other end Hinch was called into action to save.

On the stroke of half-time, England managed to take the lead through Hannah Martin.

Ellie Rayer broke from midfield before finding Martin in the circle and she hammered the ball home.

A quiet third quarter saw both defences stand firm.

With Germany chasing the game and England working to hold on to their advantage the contest became a scrappy affair.

Then with five minutes to go England doubled their lead. Bray made a clever run along the baseline before crossing to the near post, where Danson was on hand to lift the ball over the goalkeeper.

In the semi-finals against hosts Holland, England were beaten 1-0 by a goal in the final quarter by Marloes Keetels.
