BUCKSKIN darts ace Paul Hogan cruised into the first round of the British Darts Organisation World Championships at Lakeside in Frimley Green. after a straight sets victory over American Tom Sawyer.

The 53-year-old was rarely troubled in the contest, but admitted afterwards he will have to play a lot better this evening when he faces Welshman Martin Phillips.

Hogan said: "That is the worst darts I have ever played at Lakeside. I going to hit the practice boards, as I know I will have to get better if I want to carry on in this tournament."

Hogan showed Sawyer in his Lakeside debut no mercy and won the first two legs of the match, the second with an impressive 15 darts.

The American then got himself on the board, but Hogan thanks to a double 12 took the first set 3-1.

He then won the next three legs and the second set in easy fashion.

This included the highlight of the match, a 150 check-out as in fired in a treble 20, treble 18 and double 18.

The final set was the closest of the match as Hogan took a 2-1 lead, before thanks to the first maximum of the match Sawyer tied the set.

The American's chances of the taking the match into a fourth set were dashed, as Hogan finished things off with a double eight.

This sets up a first round clash with Phillips, who has twice been a beaten semi-finalists in 2010 and 2011.

Hogan in his eighth appearance at Lakeside has twice reached the quarter finals in 1995 and 2006.
